3 Korean men and 2 women advance to the semifinals starting Sunday morning at 8 a.m.

In the boys semis, No. 2 seed Park Jong-Woo meets No. 13 Kim Ju-Young and No. 8 Shin Seung-Hyeon takes on No. 5 Daniels Vezis, Latvia. On the girls side, All Events champ and No. 1 seed Kim Moon-Jeong bowls No. 13 Laura Fonnegra, Colombia, while Singles champ, Kim Yeon-Ju, seeded 7th, squares off with No. 12 Carmen Haandrikman, Netherlands.

Korea sweeps gold medals in Girls and Boys Team event at World Youth Championships

Korean girls break the leaders curse to claim the title from top seed

2010WYCTeamKorea_small.jpgThe Korean girls (pictured left with the boys) broke the leaders curse as they became the first No. 1 seed who has won a match in the playoffs of the World Youth Championships. Korea defeated No. 4 England in the semifinals of the Team event, 816-756, to advance to the title match against No. 2 Singapore (860-769 winner over Malaysia). The 4th seeded U.S. boys flew past No. 1 Estonia, 942-786, to set up a title match against the Kboys from Korea, who topped No. 3 Australia, 812-755.

Team USA members head to Tournament of The Americas

ImageA handful of Team USA members will have their first taste of international competition when they take part in the 48th Lee Evans Tournament of The Americas. The week-long competition starts Monday, Aug. 2, at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando, Fla., and the tournament features Adult, Senior (ages 50-plus), Junior A (ages 16-19) and Junior B (ages 12-15) divisions. The invitational competition for countries of PABCON (Pan American Bowling Confederation) is the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone.

BPAA announces 2011 Mid-Winter Summit moving to Red Rock Resort, Las Vegas

In support of industry efforts, summit's scope expands beyond previous years

2010BPAALogo_small.jpgThe Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) has announced the 2011 Mid-Winter Bowling Summit was moving to the Red Rock Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The move provides an opportunity for proprietors, manufacturers, suppliers and even pro bowlers to participate in industry events. For 2011, conference attendees can also attend major PBA events on the same property - the PBA Tournament of Champions and the PBA Hall of Fame dinner on January 22nd.

Estonia, Korea, Australia, USA qualify for Boys Team finals on Saturday

Estonian boys power their way into the lead to earn the No. 1 seed

The boys from Estonia (pictured) jumped from 6th to 1st place to earn the No. 1 seed for the Boys Team finals at the World Youth Championships. The Estonians led the field of 33 teams with 5008 (208.67) with Korea second (4962) and Australia third (4952). Overnight leader United States slipped to fourth place with 4932. Andrew Koff, USA, won the gold medal in All Events with 4036 18-game total with Park Jong-Woo, Korea, second (3994) and Samu Valaranta, Finland, third (3965).

Pikeville College's Kim Yioulos earns 2010 PBA Billy Welu Scholarship Award

KimYioulos_2010BillyWeluAward_small.jpgKim Yioulos (pictured), a junior at Pikeville (Ky.) College and a member of Junior Team USA, has been named the recipient of the 2010 Billy Welu Scholarship by the Professional Bowlers Association. The $1,000 scholarship recognizes exemplary qualities in college students who compete in the sport of bowling. A PBA Charter Member, the late Billy Welu won the BPAA All Star in 1959 before winning the 1964 and '65 USBC Masters events. Welu was inducted into both the PBA and USBC Halls of Fame in 1975.

The Koreans will face No. 4 England in the semifinals, while No. 2 Singapore takes on No. 3 Malaysia. Live video streaming starts Saturday at 8 a.m. CET (2 a.m. EDT). Kim Moon-Jeong, Korea, captured the gold medal in All Events with 3922 18-game total (217.89). Hayley White, England, took silver and Diana Zavjalova, Latvia, got bronze.

Zack Hattori and Morgan O'Brien win Teen Masters High School Division titles

Greg Young and Ashley Dunn win in 14-under Division

2010TeenMastersBanner_small.jpg Zack Hattori of Las Vegas and Morgan O'Brien of Lomira, Wis., won the high school boys and girls titles in the 14th annual Teen Masters at the National Bowling Stadium Thursday. Hattori won a $4,000 scholarship as high school boys winner while O'Brien won a $3,000 scholarship as high school girls champion. In the 14-under division, 14-year-old Greg Young of Viera, Fla., captured the boys title and a $1,200 scholarship while 13-year-old Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, Calif., won the girls title worth a $1,000 scholarship.

U.S. Boys lead the 33 Teams into day two on long oil at World Youth Championships

2010WYCBoysTeamUSA_small.jpg Jacob Peters, Devin Bidwell, Craig Hanson and Andrew Koff from the United States led Squad 2 with 2530 pinfall total, an average of 210.83, to overtake the lead in the Boys Team event at the 11th World Youth Championships in Helsinki, Finland. The U.S. Boys had games of 886, 862 and 782 to overtake Squad 1 leader Korea by 13 pins. France is third with 2473 with Autralia in fourth at 2471. The preliminaries will conclude Friday with the second block on long oil. The top 4 advance to the playoffs.

Edwards, Janawicz 2009 BWAA Amateur Bowlers of the Year

2010PCCoCJohnJanawiczBrendaEdwards_small.jpgTeam USA 2010 teammates Brenda Edwards, Mansfield, Texas, and John Janawicz, Winter Haven, Florida (pictured left), have been announced as winners of the Bowling Writers Association of America Amateur Bowlers of the Year for 2009. Both bowlers leveraged their 2010 U.S. Team Trials titles held in Las Vegas in December to garner the honors. Janawicz, 37, repeated his 2004 BWAA and Bowlers Journal International Amateur Bowler of the Year performance.

The foursome had games of 825, 782 and 861 to finish the 3-game block on short oil atop the leaderboard with 2468 pinfall total and an average of 205.67. The teams from Singapore, USA and Korea are between 3 and 20 pins behind in second through fourth place.

Steven Black makes it three-out-of-four in joint PBA Western Regional

PBAEst1958_small.jpgIn a joint PBA Northwest/West Regional event in Reno, Nev., on July 25, Steven Black of Phoenix won for his third time in the last four events in the Sands Regency Casino Summer Classic at High Sierra Lanes. Black, who won $2,000, defeated Curtis Woods Jr. of Santa Rosa, Calif., 184-179, for his fifth career PBA regional title. Bryon Smith of Roseburg, Ore., the 2002 USBC Masters champ, finished third. Exempt players Dave Arnold, Dublin, Calif., and Chris Warren, Grants Pass, Ore., finished fourth and ninth, respectively.

Junior Team USA sweeps Gold and Silver in Boys Doubles

Leade'rs curse still intact; No. 1 seed Korea and Malaysia share the bronze

In the title match Koff doubled in the 10th frame to give the No. 4 seeded team a com-from-behind victory, 428-426. The leader's curse is still intact as tournament leaders Kim Ju-Young and Shin Seung-Hyeon, Korea, lost in the semifinal to share the bronze medal with third seeded Malaysians Aris Ardilla Santosoh and Syimir Abdul Razak.

Worldwide interest in World Bowling Championships demonstrates universality

15 potential hosts have expressed interest in organizing the 2013 event

With almost two months to go before the October first bid submission deadline, the number and geographical diversity of potential hosts that have expressed interest in organizing the event has been impressive and reflects the universality of the sport.

2010WYCLauraFonnegraMariaJoseRodriguez_small.jpgLaura Fonnegra and Maria Jose Rodriguez (l-r) from Colombia won the gold medal in Girls Doubles at the 11th World Youth Championships in Helsinki, Finland, defeating equally tough Singaporeans Daphne Tan and New Hui Fen on long oil, 481-473. So far, each of the three zones of the World Tenpin Bowling Association, Asia, Europe and America, have won one gold medal. With three of the six playoffs (Boys and Girls Singles, Doubles and Team event) in the books, the leader's curse is still intact.

Judy Soutar celebrates golden anniversary; 50 years with Brunswick Bowling

And now, decades later, Judy Soutar is celebrating her 50th year in bowling with Brunswick; and she has never looked back. Brunswick honored Soutar during the 2010 International Bowl Expo in Las Vegas.  In front of a crowd of family, friends and fellow bowlers, Brunswick Bowling & Billiards President, Warren Hardie, presented her with a crystal bowling pin (pictured), as a token of the companies' appreciation.

USBC Youth Open concludes and an all-girls team takes the team title

More than 2,000 youth bowlers participated in the USBC Youth Open, sponsored by Pepsi, which was held at Expo Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. The non-qualifying tournament is patterned after the USBC Open Championships and USBC Women’s Championships. Youth bowlers competed in team (four players), doubles, singles and all-events during the 11 days of competition.

England's Adam Cairns comes from behind to win Boys Singles title at World Youth Championships

Malaysia's Syimir Abdul Razak shoots the first 300 game of the Championships

2010WYCBoysSinglesTop4_small.jpgAdam Cairns, England, won the first gold medal in the Boys division at the 11th World Youth Championships in Finland when he defeated Sam Cooley, Australia, 210-139, to claim the title in Boys Singles. In the championship match, Cairns raced out to an early lead and never looked back. Cooley received the silver medal while tournament leader Park Jong-Woo, Korea, and Francois Lavoie, Canada, shared the bronze medal.
