Dan Vick emerged with national titles Tuesday at the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championships in Milwaukee, Wis. Vick, a Pittsford, N.Y., native swept North Carolina State senior Vincent DiNova, 3-0, in a best-of-five, single-elimination match to win the men's national championship at Olympic Lanes. In the women's division, Pikeville junior Wright of Columbia, S.C. defeated Robert Morris College senior Kristen Nielsen, 3-1, for the women's national title.
Defending champion Elysia Current of Wichita State and Sean Rutherford of Martin Methodist earned the top seeds heading into match play at the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championships on Monday. Current, a four-time collegiate All-American and former Player of the Year, finished the 12 games of qualifying with 2,784, an average of 232.0, to lead the women's field by 138 pins at Olympic Lanes. Rutherford led the men by just over 200 pins, shooting 2,686, an average of 223.83.
When she transferred to Wichita State University two years ago, senior Elysia Current was looking to improve her all-around bowling game. While she took away a lot under the tutelage of legendary coaches Mark Lewis and Gordon Vadakin, what she gleaned most from that experience was how to manage her mental game. Current's collegiate career will come to an end next week as she looks to defend her national title at the 2008 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships, being held at Olympic Lanes in Milwaukee on May 19-20.
