Edwards, Janawicz 2009 BWAA Amateur Bowlers of the Year

2010PCCoCJohnJanawiczBrendaEdwards_small.jpgTeam USA 2010 teammates Brenda Edwards, Mansfield, Texas, and John Janawicz, Winter Haven, Florida (pictured left), have been announced as winners of the Bowling Writers Association of America Amateur Bowlers of the Year for 2009. Both bowlers leveraged their 2010 U.S. Team Trials titles held in Las Vegas in December to garner the honors. Janawicz, 37, repeated his 2004 BWAA and Bowlers Journal International Amateur Bowler of the Year performance.

Mark Williams named June BWAA Bowler of the Month

2010PBAS05MarkWilliams_small.jpgMark Williams (pictured) of Beaumont, Texas, has been named the June 2010 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the Bowling Writers Association of America. Williams, a PBA Hall of Famer, won his first major PBA Senior title, the 2010 PBA Senior U.S. Open. This marks the third career major title for Williams. He also captured the 1985 and 1988 PBA Tournament of Champions crowns. Others receiving votes were Wayne Webb, Columbus, Ohio, winner of the USBC Senior Masters, and Don Sylvia, winner, PBA Senior Northern California Classic.

Former BWAA President Walt Steinsiek dies on eve of Bowl Expo

BWAACartoonistWaltSteinsiek_small.jpgWalt Steinsiek, who served as president of the Bowling Writers Association in 1988, passed away June 27, 2010 of apparent heart failure while preparing to leave his Micco, Florida home to attend International Bowl Expo in Las Vegas. He was 84. Steinsiek was widely known as "The world's greatest bowling cartoonist." He drew thousands of cartoons about the sport he loved, provided mostly without charge to various bowling organizations; but he also published a half dozen bowling cartoon books, the first in 1973, called Balls-Bowling of Course!

Kelly Kulick threepeats as BWAA Bowler of the Month

ImageKelly Kulick (pictured) of Union, New Jersey, has been unanimously named the May 2010 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the Bowling Writers Association of America. Her 2010 U.S. Women's Open victory was Kulick's fourth major title in the last nine months and the second in a fifteen day span. She added the Open title to the USBC Queens, PBA Women's World Championship, and her historic PBA Tournament of Champions victory.

Chuck Pezzano Scholarship application deadline extended

Aspiring Bowling Writers can apply through June 1

The scholarship is named in honor of world renowned journalist Chuck Pezzano (r.), Clifton, N.J. whose many tributes include being a member of both the USBC and PBA Halls of Fame. Up to 3 cholarships per year may be awarded based on the applicant's credentials.

Kelly Kulick repeats as BWAA Bowler of the Month

2010USBCQKellyKulick_small.jpgKelly Kulick, Union, New Jersey, has been named the Kegel Bowler of the Month for April 2010 by the Bowling Writers Association of America. Kulick won the 2010 USBC Queens, her third major title in the last eight months. The first was the PBA Women's World Championship, followed by her historic PBA Tournament of Champions win in January. The latter netted her the January BWAA Kegel Bowler of the Month honor.

BWAA announces finalists for 2009-2010 Collegiate Bowler of the Year honors

2008BWAALogo_small.jpgThe Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA) has selected the finalists for this season's Collegiate Bowler of the Year honors. The final results will be announced Wednesday, April 13, at the Camino Real Hotel in El Paso, Texas, during the awards dinner to be held in conjunction with the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships.

Brian Kretzer captures March BWAA Bowler of the Month honors

200910PBABrianKretzer_small.jpgBrian Kretzer (pictured) of Dayton, Ohio, has been named the Kegel Bowler of the Month for March 2010 by the Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA). Kretzer bowled in the title match in back-to-back Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour events. Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas, defeated Kretzer in the Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator, 206-195. Kretzer then captured his first career PBA title, the Go RVing Match Play Championship defeating Patrick Allen, Wesley Chapel, Fla., 629-566.

Bill O'Neill doubles up as February BWAA Bowler of the Month

O'Neill backed up his September 2009 BWAA Kegel Bowler of the Month award winning his second PBA title in five months, the 67th Lumber Liquidators U.S Open. Finishing a very close second in voting was Walter Ray Williams, Jr. (r.), Ocala, Florida, winner of the USBC Masters.

BWAA also announced John Berglund (r.) of St. Martin, French West Indies, as their winner of the organization's 2010 Alberta Crowe Meritorious Service Award, honoring his years of off-the-lanes dedication to the sport.

Norm Duke, Liz Johnson earn BWAA Bowler of the Year honors

200910PBA03LizJohnson_small.jpg200910PBANormDuke_small.jpgNorm Duke (l.) and Liz Johnson (r.) have been chosen as the best bowlers of the calendar year 2009 by the Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA). For Duke, it is back-to-back crowns, as he also won in 2008, and it is his fourth overall (1994, 2000) Johnson's 2009 award was her third, and her best performances are coming in odd years. She also won in 2005 and 2007. Duke edged Wes Malott, 57-23, while Johnson won handily over Kelly Kulick, 105-43.

BWAA names Ron Mohr, Robin Romeo as Senior Bowlers of Year 2009

2009PBASRonMohr_small.jpg2009USBCWCRobinRomeo_small.jpgBowling Writers Association of America (BWAA) President Jackie Wyckoff announced that Ron Mohr, Eagle River, Ark., and Robin Romeo, Newhall, Calif., have been elected as 2009 BWAA Senior Bowlers of the Year. Mohr (l.), 53, captured three PBA Senior titles and had the high average for the season with 223.14. Romeo (r.), 52, easily won the female Senior Bowler of the Year honors with her dazzling performance in the USBC Women's Championships in Reno.

Kelly Kulick unanimous choice as January 2010 Kegel Bowler of the Month

200910PBA10KellyKulick2_small.jpgKelly Kulick (pictured) of Union, N.J., has been unanimously named the January 2010 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA). Kulick became the first woman to capture a Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title, the PBA Tournament of Champions, by defeating top-seeded Chris Barnes, Double Oak, Texas, 265-195. This is Kulick's third BWAA Kegel Bowler of the Month award, also claiming honors in May 2007 and June 2006.

Smalllwood ends year with BWAA Kegel Bowler of the Month honor

Smallwood captured his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title, the PBA World Championship, by defeating reigning PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott, 244-228. Smallwood's year-long rise from unemployed General Motors assembly line worker to PBA champion has captured headlines in numerous high profile national and local electronic, print, and online media outlets.

Weber three-petes as BWAA Kegel Bowler of the Month

PBA Hall of Famer nabs November honors

200910PBAPeteWeber_small.jpgPete Weber (pictured) of St. Ann, Missouri, has been named the November 2009 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the Bowling Writers Association of America. In addition to 34 victories on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour, his win at the PBA Midwest Region Plamor Lanes Open in Muscatine, Iowa, was Weber's 43rd PBA Regional title and overall 77th PBA title, both PBA records. The PBA and USBC Hall of Famer continues a steady steak of Bowler of the Month awards, also being named in March 2007 and December 2005.

In 2006, he was inducted into the Bowling Writers Association of America's Hall of Fame for his continuing publication of The Bowling News, a weekly bowling tabloid newspaper Gennaro has published since 1956. Now 83, and experiencing some health problems, Gennaro (center) decided it was time to sell his beloved business. In late summer, he sold it to Tony (r.) and Genie Franklin (l.).

O'Neill named Kegel Bowler of the Month for September

Tops biggest-ever field to grab honors

2009PCBillONeill_small.jpgBill O'Neill of Southampton, Pa. has been named Kegel Bowler of the Month by the Bowling Writers Association of America for September. O'Neill won his first PBA title, the PBA Chameleon Championship over Ronnie Russell, Indianapolis, 205-192, and then continued his hot hand in the PABCON Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico, winning four out of a possible six gold medals. A total of 14 Bowler of the Month nominees were presented to the selection committee, the largest slate of names ever nominated for this award.

Boomershine named BWAA's August Kegel Bowler of the Month

2009WUSOTammyBoomershine2_small.jpgTammy Boomershine of Ogden, Utah has been named the Bowling Writers Association of America's Kegel Bowler of the Month for August. Boomershine won the 2009 U.S. Women's Open defeating USBC Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard in the title match, 269-225. In reference to her power game and a popular movie of the era, the "Taminator" was the 1994 Professional Women's Bowling Association's Rookie of the Year and 1996 PWBA Player of the Year. Boomershine also qualified third for the 2009-10 PBA Women's Series Tour Trials.

Nation wins BWAA July Bowler of the Month

2009WWCStefanieNationSinglesGold_small.jpgStefanie Nation (pictured left) of Arlington, Texas has been named the July 2009 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the Bowling Writers Association of America. Nation captured the singles gold medal at the World Tenpin Bowling Association Women’s Championships in Las Vegas. She became the third American woman to win the gold medal at the WTBA Women’s Championships, following Kelly Kulick in 1999 and Shannon O’Keefe in 2007.

2009 Chuck Pezzano Scholarship fund recipients announced

2008BWAALogo_small.jpgWith the goal to find young, talented, intelligent writers from our youth bowlers, this year the Chuck Pezzano Scholarship received 13 very qualified applicants, the most in the history of Bowling Writers Association of America. Scholarship chairman, Joan Romeo, worked diligently with several proprietor groups and state writers groups to get the word out and her efforts paid off. The 2009 first place winner, Thomas Madrecki, Northbrook, Ill, will receive a $1000. scholarship. All thirteen applicants will receive a one-year paid membership in the BWAA.
