2006 PBA Senior Tour #3

Golden Pin Lanes in Tucson, Ariz., United States (June 10-14, 2006)

2006PBAS03TomBaker.jpg Tom Baker's domination of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour has reached an all-time high. Baker, last year's PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year, became the first bowler since 2001 to win back-to-back PBA Senior Tour titles, defeating Pete Couture, two-games-to-one, in the title match of the 2006 Senior Tucson Open at Golden Pin Lanes. The 51-year-old finished second in the season-opening Senior Manassas Open, then won the following week's Senior Chillicothe Open. The Tour then took a five-week hiatus, but Baker didn't lose his momentum. He led the field this week after 16 games of qualifying, then went 10-3 in match play.

"I've been on a roll lately and when you get on a roll you just try to keep it going as long as you can and not think about it too much," said Baker, who is the 10th bowler in PBA Senior Tour history to win consecutive titles. "Every week when you bowl, your goal is to win and I accomplished my goal this week."

2006PBASPeteCouture_small.jpg Baker (King, N.C.) won the first game of the best-of-three-games title match, 259-210, after starting the game with six consecutive strikes. Couture (right) bounced back with a 254-232 win in game two, but Baker would not be denied in the final game.

The PBA Hall of Famer who is exempt on the Denny's PBA Tour started game three with eight straight strikes, but a 10-pin denied him a perfect game. Nevertheless, Baker coasted to the 279-202 title-clinching win.

2006PBASGuppyTroup_small.jpg Couture (Titusville, Fla.) was vying for his 10th PBA Senior Tour title, which would have made him just the fifth bowler all-time with at least 10 titles. He advanced to the title match with a 2-1 win over Guppy Troup (Taylorsville, N.C.).

Ross_Packard_5243.jpg Baker, who finished second last season at Golden Pin Lanes, advanced to the title match with a 2-1 win over Ross Packard (San Jose, Calif., right).

The next stop on the PBA Senior Tour is the 2006 Senior U.S. Open at Suncoast Bowling Center, June 20-24, the first of two Majors on the schedule. Over 300 bowlers will be vying for the $20,000 top-prize and a berth in the 2007 Dexter Tournament of Champions during the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season.

Tom Baker takes No. 1 seed for match play in Tucson

2003PBA20TomBaker.jpg With a first and second place finish in the first two PBA Senior Tour events, Tom Baker will go for another title match appearance Wednesday, leading the pack after 16 games of qualifying in the Senior Tucson Open at Golden Pin Lanes.

Baker (King, N.C.) started the day averaging 262.50 in the first four games to build a comfortable lead, but a struggle with the lane conditions resulted in his average dropping 46 pins over the last four games.

"It was hooking a little bit more than usual. The first four games were better (because) there was more oil and the second four were not as good," said Baker. "But I got good action today and I look forward to tomorrow and the first three games." He finished the day with a 3,709 16-game pinfall.

Starting the day in 12th place, eight-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist Guppy Troup (Taylorsville, N.C.) moved up to second after qualifying with a 3637 16-game pinfall.

Six-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist Gary Skidmore (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned the final spot in match play finishing 32nd with a 3,305 16-game pinfall, while Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.) finished in 8th with a 3,462 16-game pinfall.

Jim Brenner dominates Day One in PBA Senior Tucson Open

PBAS2006JimBrenner.jpg Jim Brenner dominates Day One in PBA Senior Tucson Open A strong finish Monday propelled Jim Brenner to the lead after the first day of qualifying in the 2006 Senior Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tucson Open at Golden Pin Lanes. Brenner, a two-time Senior PBA Tour titlist, fired a 279 in game seven and a 268 in game eight to finish with a 1,936 eight-game pinfall.

The 66-year-old, who last won on the PBA Senior Tour in 1996, started the day strong averaging 237 over his first three games. After a 175 in game four – his only game under 200 on the day – Brenner averaged 262.50 over the final four games to take the lead.

"The way the lanes hooked (Sunday) in practice I didn't know what would happen today," said Brenner, LeClaire, Ia.. "But I had two different balls and a couple boards to play with today and just matched up well."

Brenner finished over 100 pins ahead of the second-place bowler, Chuck Haus (Linden, Mich.), who finished with 1,831. Ross Packard (San Jose, Calif.) and Dick Selgo (Archibold, Ohio) are tied for third with 1,829 while Roger LeClair (Clackamas, Ore.) is fifth with 1,818.

PBA Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson (Edmond, Okla.) is sixth with 1,797. The three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year is gunning for his 12th career PBA Senior Tour title.

The 2005 PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year Tom Baker (King, N.C.) is seventh with 1,795. Baker won the most recent PBA Senior Tour event, the 2006 Senior Chillicothe Open in May.

All bowlers will return Tuesday for another eight games of qualifying before the field is cut to the top 32 who will begin match play Tuesday night. Match play continues Wednesday until just two bowlers remain. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Wednesday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.
