2006 PBA Senior Tour #4

Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev. (June 18-21, 2006)

2006PBAS04TomBaker.jpg After 51 games of grueling competition and ever-changing lane conditions, another win is in the books for Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Tom Baker in the Senior U.S. Open Friday at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

Tom Baker defeated Dick Baker, 215-176, in the championship match, becoming the first bowler in PBA Senior Tour history to win three consecutive titles.

"I went out there and I knew that today I was going to have tough competition," said Baker, who became the first bowler to defend a Senior U.S. Open title. "I really didn't think about (the record). I was just thinking about winning the tournament."

There was no catching the King, N.C. native as he dominated the field, finishing 51 games of qualifying and match play with a 214.47 average and a 195-pin lead. He struggled, however, in the title match with a 6-7-10 split in the first frame and some high pocket shots that left a number of single-pin spares to be converted.

"I was having some trouble with the conditions and the way my body felt," said Tom Baker. "My feet were tired and as I was bowing, I was leaning a little bit more than normal, trying to keep my weight back."

Dick Baker started the stepladder finals in third place, defeating fourth-seeded Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.), 217-181, and second-seeded David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas), 238-227, before losing in the final. The local favorite from Henderson, Nev. has been a PBA member since 1992 and has yet to win a title.

Tom Baker earns $20,000 for his victory and assures himself a spot in next season's PBA Tournament of Champions. Dick Baker takes home $11,000 for second, Ozio earns $7,000 for third and Roger Kossert takes home $5,500 for fourth.

Next week, the PBA Senior Tour heads to Epicenter Lanes in Klamath Falls, Ore. for the PBA Senior Epicenter Classic. The four-bowler finals with take place Wednesday, June 28 at 7 p.m. PT.

300 games - Dick Baker

Baker goes 8-0 and pulls ahead of the field in PBA Senior U.S. Open

Tom_Baker_5733.jpg Tom Baker continued to dominate the field in the PBA Senior U.S. Open after eight games of match play Thursday with a 7,929 35-game pinfall, setting him 395 pins ahead of the rest. Baker won all eight of his matches, earning 30 bonus pins for each win.

He is looking to become the first bowler in history to win three consecutive PBA Senior Tour events as well as the first to defend his Senior U.S. Open title.

"I bowled really consistently today," said Baker (King, N.C.). "I stayed clean and never got in trouble. My lowest game was 197, so I had 16 out of 17 games over 200. When it's low scoring, that's what you've got to do."

Including Baker, all four bowlers who made last year's Senior U.S. Open championship round are in the top five. PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) – the 2004 Senior U.S. Open champion who fell to Baker in last year's semifinal – is second with 7,534.

Left-hander Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.), who finished fourth in last season's Senior U.S. Open, is third after qualifying with 7,524, while Dennis Psaropoulos (Lake Worth, Fla.) is fifth with 7,510. Psaropoulos fell to Baker in last year's title match.

Match play continues Friday morning with the top four bowlers advancing to the stepladder finals at 3:30 p.m. The winner will take home $20,000 and earn a spot in the 2007 PBA Tournament of Champions, one of four Denny's PBA Tour Majors.

Baker widens his lead in PBA Senior U.S. Open

Tom Baker.jpg Tom Baker put a little more distance between himself and the rest of the field in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior U.S. Open Thursday, while inching closer to history.

Baker grinded out another strong block on difficult conditions Thursday to finish qualifying as the overall leader with a 5,922 27-game pinfall at the Suncoast Bowling Center. The PBA Hall of Famer is looking to become the first bowler in history to win three consecutive PBA Senior Tour events as well as the first to defend his Senior U.S. Open title.

"It was a grind out there… the lanes were tough," said Baker (King, N.C.). "I just stayed clean. It was just tough to get anything going out there. I like the fact they're not re-oiling before match play. I'll probably like the lanes a lot better tonight."

David_Ozio_3704.jpg Baker's low game in the nine-game block was a 197 in his fifth game while his high was a 230 in game three. He finished with a 1,912 nine-game pinfall maintaining his lead from Wednesday.

Including Baker, all four bowlers who made last year's Senior U.S. Open championship round are in the top five. PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (left, Beaumont, Texas) – the 2004 Senior U.S. Open champion who fell to Baker in last year's semifinal – is second with 5,818.

Roger_Kossert_4689.jpg Dennis Psaropoulos.jpg Left-hander Roger Kossert (left, Lithia, Fla.), who finished fourth in last season's Senior U.S. Open, is fourth after qualifying with 5,729, while Dennis Psaropoulos (right, Lake Worth, Fla.) is fifth with 5,723. Psaropoulos fell to Baker in last year's title match.

The top 24 advance to round robin match play which gets underway this afternoon at 2 p.m. PT. Match play continues Friday, with the top four bowlers advancing to the stepladder finals Friday at 3:30 p.m. The winner will take home $20,000 and earn a spot in the 2007 PBA Tournament of Champions, one of four Denny's PBA Tour Majors.

Baker leads as PBA Senior U.S. Open fiels is cut to top 81

2006PBASTomBaker.jpg After three grueling days of qualifying in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior U.S. Open, defending champion Tom Baker has taken the lead once more at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

Baker (King, N.C.), with first place finishes in the last two Senior Tour events, averaged 219.83 Wednesday and finished with a 4,010 18-game pinfall and a 222.78 average overall. "Those lanes were tough today," said Baker. "It was a big move from pair to pair, (but) I like the challenge."

The 2004 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) shared the lead with Baker on Tuesday, but fell into third place after bowling a 168 in the 17th game of qualifying. This would not be the first time that Ozio and Baker could fight for the U.S. Open title. Baker defeated Ozio in last year's Senior U.S. Open semifinals.

"He won it two years ago (and) I won it last year," Baker said. "It'll be a battle to the end of two Hall of Famers."

Dennis Psaropoulos.jpg Amateur Dennis Psaropoulos (Lake Worth, Fla.) climbed from 25th to second place, bowling a 300 in his 17th game of qualifying and ending the day with a 3,987 18-game pinfall. Psaropoulos lost to Baker in the title match of the 2005 Senior U.S. Open.

Wayne Nosse (Crest Hill, Ill.) landed the last spot in the cut to 81 bowlers with a 3,570 18-game pinfall.

Bowling resumes Thursday at 7 a.m. with the top qualifiers bowling nine games before the field is cut to 24. Stepladder finals take place Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT with the winner taking home $20,000 and earning a spot in the 2007 PBA Tournament of Champions.

Baker and Ozio tie for the lead in PBA Senior U.S. Open

2006PBASTomBaker_small.jpg David_Ozio_3705.jpg In an exiting finish to the second day of qualifying, Tom Baker (right) and David Ozio (left) tied for the lead in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior U.S. Open at the Suncoast Bowling Center Tuesday with a 2,691 pinfall for 12 games.

The two PBA Hall of Famers were even going into game 12 before both bowled 255 to stay equal. Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) had the opportunity to take the lead by a single pin in the 10th, but left the 4-pin in his last shot to solidify the tie.

"I thought I bowled physically pretty well," said Ozio. "It was hooking at the fifth arrow so we had to play a lot deeper."

Baker (King, N.C.), who started out in 28th after the first six games of qualifying, averaged 234.67 with a 1,408 six-game pinfall for the day to move into the lead.

"I definitely bowled better today. I drilled four new balls this morning and I used one today and had a lot better ball reaction," Baker said. "I just wanted to get in position for the next couple days. It's going to take 51 games this week and we've only bowled 12."

Amateur Frank DeRemer (Lacey, Wash.) led after the first two squads, ending the day in third place, with a 12-game total pinfall of 2,670 and a 222.50 average. Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.), a 10-time Senior Tour titlist, also finished in the top 10, taking ninth place with a 2,583 12-game pinfall and 215.25 average.

Bowling continues Wednesday with six more games of qualifying after which the field will be cut to the top 25 percent. Stepladder finals take place Friday evening with the winner taking home $20,000 earning a spot in the 2007 PBA Tournament of Champions.

Bob Kelly leads after Day One in PBA Senior U.S. Open

2006PBAS04BobKelly.jpg For many years, Bob Kelly watched and supported his wife, Linda, throughout her Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) Hall of Fame career. Now Bob Kelly is taking his turn in the spotlight.

Kelly led the field of 327 bowlers after the first day of qualifying Monday in the 2006 Senior U.S. Open presented by the Suncoast, the first of two Majors on the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour schedule.

The 53-year-old, who became a PBA member a little over a year ago after retiring from 35 years of work at General Motors, finished the day with a 1,397 six-game pinfall.

"(Linda) said today, 'just go out there and bowl and get all the pins you can get. Don't worry about everyone else,'" said Kelly (Dayton, Ohio). "I've been there a lot with her and now it's my turn. I haven't bowled to my potential yet. It's a big learning process for me, a big learning curve, and I'm just enjoying it."

Kelly did not dip below 200 in any of his six games. A high of 252 in game five put him within the lead, and a 238 in game six pushed him past Bob Chamberlain in the standings.

Bob_Chamberlain_2132.jpg The 2003 PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Chamberlain (left, The Villages, Fla.) is second with 1,383. Warren Nelson (Madera, Calif.), a two-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist looking for his first career Senior Tour title, is third with 1,365.

Steve Fehr (Cincinnati) is fourth with 1,363 and Lauri Karppala Jr. (Folsom, Calif.), who had the only 300 game of the day, is fifth with 1,345.

2006PBASTomBaker_small.jpg Defending champion Tom Baker (right, King, N.C.), who is looking to become the first bowler in history to win three consecutive PBA Senior Tour events and defend a Senior U.S. Open crown, is tied for 28th with 1,283.

All competitors will bowl another six games of qualifying on Tuesday and Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 81. Those 81 will then bowl an additional nine games of qualifying Thursday after which the top 24 will advance to round robin match play. The final four will bowl for the $20,000 top prize and a spot in the 2007 PBA Tournament of Champions Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT.
