2006 PBA Senior Tour #5

The Epicenter Bowling Complex in Klamath Falls, Ore. (June 25-28, 2006)

2006PBAS05JimBrenner.jpg After a decade of waiting, Jim Brenner made history Wednesday, in the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Epicenter Classic at the Epicenter Bowling Complex, taking his first title in ten years and becoming the oldest player ever to win a Senior Tour title.

"I'm elated," said Brenner. "I never thought this would happen again. In the ninth and tenth frame my heart was just racing."

After qualifying in sixth place and eliminating Roger LeClair (Clackamas, Ore.) in the Round of 8, Brenner rolled past Bob Kelly (Dayton, Ohio) in the semi-finals before taking the championship match 2-1 against Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

"Jim had a great shot and he made great shots," said Gonzalez, who won the season opener in in Manassas, Va. "It was definitely his turn."

Brenner, who turns 67 on July fifth, broke the record previously held by Hall of Famer Dave Soutar (Bradenton Fla.) who won the PBA Senior U.S. Open in 2003 at the age of 63.

A native of LeClaire, Iowa, and father of six, Brenner even took time to bowl a few extra games after the championship match with some of the junior scorekeeping volunteers.

Senior Tour titlist Tom Baker (King, N.C.) also had a chance to make PBA history and become the first player to win four consecutive titles, but was eliminated in the Round of 8 by ninth seeded Jimmy Young (Pasadena, Texas).

Next week, the PBA Senior Tour heads to Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood, Calif. for the PBA Senior Northern California Classic. The four-bowler finals with take place Wednesday, July fifth at 7 p.m. PT.

Baker continued to lead after 16 Games in PBA Senior Epicenter Classic

Tom Baker.jpg Tom Baker may be leading the field after two days of competition in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Epicenter Classic, but there is plenty of match play left at the Epicenter Bowling Complex.

Baker (King, N.C.) qualified with a 3,745 16-game pinfall Tuesday, and finished with a 234.06 average. Not far behind, local bowler Roger LeClair qualified in third place with a 222.63 average and a 3,562 16-game pinfall.

"It's always nice to be back in your home state," said LeClair. "Watching guys like Kevin Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.) bowl well is great."

LeClair, originally from Clackamass, Ore. placed fifth in the first three Senior Tour events this year, before missing the cut in the Senior U.S. Open last week. Regardless, he has been happy with his performance thus far.

"I'm definitely bowling better this year, and I think the main thing is hard work. My concentration is much better and I'm looking forward to match play."

Senior Tour titlist Bob Handley (Winter Park, Fla.) earned the final spot in match play finishing 32nd with a 3,182 16-game pinfall, while Ernie Schlegel (Vancouver, Wash.) finished in 8th with a 3,399 16-game pinfall.

Match play continues Wednesday until just two bowlers remain. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Wednesday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.

Tom Baker leads the field after Day One qualifying

2006PBASTomBaker_small.jpg Tom Baker takes an early lead after the first day of qualifying in the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Epicenter Classic Monday at the Epicenter Bowling Complex.

The first bowler in PBA Senior Tour history to win three consecutive titles, Baker (King, N.C.) finished the day with a 1,852 eight-game pinfall, 68 pins above the rest of the field. "My job is to knock down the pins and that's why I'm here," Baker said. "It's a new week and I'm just taking it squad to squad."

All eight of Baker's games in the first squad of qualifying were above 200 when many of the bowlers were struggling to break 190 with the tough lane conditions. "I had a good reaction out there," said Baker. "I know scores were on the low side, but I carried most of my light hits and today you had to be pretty versatile."

Gary Dickinson (Edmond, Okla.) led the second squad of the day with a 1,784 eight-game pinfall to finish in second place followed by last year's defending champion Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.) with a 1,714 eight-game pinfall.

Another Senior Tour titlist, Don Sylvia (Discovery Bay, Calif.) bowled the high game of the day with a 279, finishing in 14th place with a 1,651 eight game pinfall.

All bowlers will return Tuesday for another eight games of qualifying before the field is cut to the top 32 who will begin match play Tuesday night. Match play continues Wednesday until just two bowlers remain. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Wednesday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.
