2006 PBA Senior Tour #8

Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Ind. (August, 7-10, 2006)

2006PBAS08JimmyYoungandfiance.jpg Another new champion reigned in the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Lake County Open as Jimmy Young (pictured here with his fiance) won his first PBA Senior Tour Title Thursday at Olympia Lanes.

Young was the No. 19 seed coming into match play, defeating No. 30 Steve Stein (Staten Island, N.Y.) 3-0, No. 3 Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.) 3-1, No. 6 Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.) 3-0, and No. 2 David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) 2-1 before meeting Ron Winger (Las Vegas, Nev.) in the championship match.

"I'm just about as excited as I can be," said Young. "To win your first title and for it to be a national title on top of that, it's a great feeling."

The title match was close, with Winger able to secure game one (235-217) before falling to Young in games two and three (222-220, 210-206). Originally from Pasadena, Texas, Young wanted to thank all of the friends and family that have supported him in his bowling career, especially his mom.

"On Sunday mornings we'd bowl two games after church and then go out for turkey dinner," Young said. "And she finally talked the men that worked at the counter into letting us bowl in a league. I'd like to dedicate this title to her."

The past three Senior Lake County Open champions, - Vince Mazzanti Jr. (Levittown, Pa.) in 2003, Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.) in 2004, and Gene Vincent (Decatur, Ill.) in 2005, - were also first time PBA Senior Tour titlists.

In one of Thursday's match play highlights, PBA Hall of Famers Tom Baker and David Ozio met in an exciting Round of 8 match. Baker (Buffalo, N.Y.) was able sneak by Ozio in the first game by two pins (269-267) with Ozio stealing the next 258-244. Then, it was a perfect 300 game for Ozio in game three and a 267 for the Texan in game four to secure the match. Ozio was the only bowler in the top 15 to qualify for the semifinals.

Next week, the PBA Senior Tour heads to Spare Time Lanes, in Decatur, Ill., for the 2006 Senior Decatur Open, the final event of the 2006 PBA Senior Tour season. The championship match will take place Tuesday, August 15th at 7 p.m. CT.

John Dudak leads top 32 into match play in Hammond

After two days and 16 games, John Dudak is leading the pack in the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Lake County Open at Olympia Lanes. The local from Orland Park, Ill., averaged 228.94 Wednesday and finished with a 3,663 16-game total pinfall to earn the top seed entering Thursday's match play.

"I took a couple months off and I just feel better," said Dudak, reaping the benefits of a newly implemented exercise routine. "And I think I have the right equipment for the conditions." Dudak finished 29th in last year's Senior Lake County Open, advancing to the Round of 32 before falling to fourth seeded Don Sylvia (Discovery Bay, Calif.) 3-1.

PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) finished in second place with a 3,613 16-game total pinfall, and Pete Bryan (Laurel, Del.) secured the final match play spot with a 3,346 16-game total pinfall.

Gary Smith (E. Peoria, Ill.) ended the day in 16th place after bowling the first 300 of the tournament in his third game of the day.

Tonight's winners advance to face qualifiers 9-16 Thursday morning. Those winners will then face qualifiers 1-8. Match play continues Thursday until just two bowlers remain. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Thursday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.

David Ozio leads Qualifying in PBA Senior Lake County Open

2004PBASRotYDavidOzio.jpg After the first day of qualifying, David Ozio leads the way in the 2006 PBA (Professional Bowlers Association) Senior Lake County Open at Olympia Lanes.

The PBA Hall of Famer averaged 240.38 for eight games Tuesday, ending the day with a 1,923 eight-game total pinfall to secure the lead by over one hundred pins after the first round of competition.

“My game feels in order,” said Ozio. “I’ve been on a bit of a run here the last couple of weeks, and I’ve been bowling really well.”

The native of Beaumont, Texas, shot his high score of the day twice in qualifying, a 279 in the third and fifth games.

“I might have missed the pocket three times today,” Ozio said. “And it motivates me to keep doing better.”

Bill_Spigner_5724.jpg Bill Spigner (Vernon Hills, Ill., pictured left), who will be the host proprietor of the 2006 Denny’s PBA Tour Windy City Classic, averaged 226.63 with a 1,813 eight-game total pinfall to finish in the second place spot, followed by USBC Hall of Famer Bob Chamberlain (The Villages, Fla.), rolling a 1,806 total pinfall for eight games.

All bowlers will return Wednesday for another eight games of qualifying before the field is cut to the top 32 who will begin match play Wednesday night. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Thursday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.
