Columbia 300 Vienna Open - Playoff Results
First Match: #11 Osku Palermaa def. #23 David Haynes, 221-213
Both players started the match with an open frame. Osku opened again in the second frame, while David spared in frames 2-5. Osku, who delivers the ball with both hands, struck on his next three shots to take a ten pin lead after frame 5 (93-83). David (pictured) got his first strike on the right lane (lane 29) in the sixth frame and spared 6-10 in frame 7 on the left lane (28). The finals are staged in a kind of arena style. The players sit on red leather chairs while some spectators are seated on the left and right side of the lanes and behind the players.
"I changed the ball one frame too late", said Haynes, who started with the Storm Vertigo and changed to the Tropical Storm in the eighth frame. "The pair hooked a little more than the lanes we played before and the Tropical Storm went straighter then the Vertigo". Haynes finished fourth, worth 2500 Euro.
Second Match: Palermaa def. #2 Lasse Lintilä, 221-192
Both players opened in the sixth frame. Lasse rebounded with a double to take a slim lead in the seventh frame as Osku had spare and a strike in frames 7 and 8. Lasse had the chance to shut out Osku but left a 9-pin in frame 9 to open the door for Osku.
Finishing first Osku threw four solid strikes to shut out the High Roller champion with another 221 to 192.
Championship Match: Palermaa def. #1 Petri Mannonen, 228-181.
Osku started with strike, spare, double-strike and spare. The player with the powerful two-handed style (pictured left) looked very confident. Petri (on the right) had a spare in the first two frames, opened in the third, got his first strike in the fourth frame and added another spare in the fifth to trail Osku by 23 pins (66-89). Both players struck in frames six and seven, they spared in the 8th frame and struck again in the 9th. Leading by 25 pins, Osku had to finish first, Like in the two matches before, he fired the ball into the pocket to shut out his opponent with a strike in the 10th frame to win his second EBT title this season and the 8.000 Euro top prize (approx. $9,560).
" I was confident all week and I had a good day today," said the winner afterwards. "I locked a spot in the top eight already before this tournament, but I don't think I can win the rankings. Paul Moor is way ahead but of course I will try, the champion will earn five grand."
