Swanson wins 2008 PBA Lake County Indiana Regional Players Championship
05/27/08
Sean Swanson was out of his comfort zone as an exempt bowler on the Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour in 2007-08. Now that he’s back in his element, Swanson is back to his winning ways.
Swanson defeated Gregg Zicha, 247-154, Monday to win the 2008 PBA Lake County Indiana Regional Players Championship at Stardust Bowl II, his first career PBA Regional Tour Major title.
After winning the 2006-07 PBA Southwest Region, Swanson earned his first career PBA Tour exemption, but being away from home for most of six months saw him drop to 53rd in the PBA World Point Rankings knocking him out of the running for a 2008-09 exemption.
"The Tour just wasn't for me," Swanson (Springfield, Mo.) said. "I'd rather be gone 2-3 days a week than weeks at a time."
A regional bowler at heart, Swanson showed where his comfort level was this weekend, dominating his opponents on Monday. He capped it off with an easy win against Zicha.
Swanson won his first four matches by a combined 10-2 match score. He then took down the No. 2 seed John Gould (Richmond, Calif.), 223-167, in the semifinals before squaring off against Zicha.
The title match was never in doubt as Zicha (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) opened in the third and fourth frames and Swanson ran away with the match by striking in the first five frames and in seven of the first nine, clinching the victory with a strike in the ninth frame.
"The last two matches today I was lucky to get off to a good start in each," Swanson said. "The lanes were really difficult today and when the lanes are tough, if you get out to a good start with a couple strikes your opponents start squeezing it a little bit and that leads to some splits."
The victory was the 15th PBA Regional Tour title of Swanson's career, but his first Major. He earned $9,000 for the victory along with a spot in the prestigious 2008-09 PBA Tournament of Champions as well as a berth in the 2008 PBA Regional Players Invitational.
Zicha took home $5,000 for second while Gould and Craig Tuholski (Washougal, Wash.) earned $2,800 for third and fourth.
Stardust Bowl II hosts the Denny's PBA Tour Trials later this week where nearly 100 bowlers will battle it out for the final seven exemptions for the 2008-09 PBA Tour. Competition starts Wednesday with the first of five nine-game qualifying blocks. The seven bowlers with the highest 45-game pinfall after five days will receive one-season exemptions.

Jason Lundquist averaged 230.13 over his eight-game block Sunday to finish qualifying with a 3,662 16-game pinfall to earn the top spot for match play in the 2008 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Regional Players Championship at Stardust Bowl II. Photo PBA.
The Regional Players Championship is one of two majors on the PBA Regional Tour and offers a $10,000 top-prize, a berth in the 2008-09 PBA Tournament of Champions and an automatic entry into the PBA Regional Players Invitational, where eight exemptions for the 2009-10 PBA Tour season will be up for grabs.
Lundquist became a PBA member in 2006 and won his lone PBA Regional Tour title last summer. He just missed an exemption for the 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour, finishing second in the PBA East Region.
The 32-year-old from Delaware Water Gap, Pa., finished fourth at last year's Regional Players Championship, falling to eventual champion Scott Santos in the semifinals. He'll look to survive single elimination match play on Monday and earn a shot at redemption.
"I think I have a good enough ball reaction and since I'll be facing lower seeds early on tomorrow I'll have the better chance," Lundquist said. "I have better carry right now that not too many people can touch. As long as I can keep that reaction going I'll be okay."
The lefty maintained his success from Saturday's first day of qualifying without too many adjustments.
"(Saturday) there was a lot more hook so I tightened up my line but played the same part of the lane. I played fourth arrow almost the entire day and never moved right of 23-24," Lundquist said. "I was a little more consistent today than yesterday. I just tried to stay as steady as I could and just tried to find a way to keep carry alive."
John Gould (Richmond, Calif.) finished second with 3,606 while 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour exempt player Jason Wojnar (Chicago) finished third with 3,579. Saturday's leader Thomas Smallwood (Saginaw, Mich.) dropped to fourth with 3,565 while Brad Snell (Mount Prospect, Ill.) rounded out the top five with 3,536.
Ronnie Horton (Christiansburg, Va.) earned the final spot in match play, finishing 64th with 3,248, one pin ahead of Tim Kelly (Orland Park, Ill.).
The top 64 advance to match play which features single elimination best-of-five games in the Rounds of 64 and 32 and best-of-three in the Rounds of 16 and 8. Single-game matches determine the semifinals and finals.
The Round of 64 gets underway at 8 a.m. CT followed by the Round of 32 at Noon and the Round of 16 at 2 p.m. The remaining rounds will begin immediately following the completion of each preceding round.
Players with position, hometown and 16-game pinfall. Top 64 advance to match play. Positions 65-70 cash.

PBA Regional
Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind., (May 25-26, 2008)
Sean Swanson was out of his comfort zone as an exempt bowler on the Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour in 2007-08.

Lundquist leads top 64 into match play in PBA Regional Players Championship
Jason Lundquist averaged 230.13 over his eight-game block Sunday to finish qualifying with a 3,662 16-game pinfall to earn the top spot for match play in the 2008 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Regional Players Championship at Stardust Bowl II. Photo PBA.The Regional Players Championship is one of two majors on the PBA Regional Tour and offers a $10,000 top-prize, a berth in the 2008-09 PBA Tournament of Champions and an automatic entry into the PBA Regional Players Invitational, where eight exemptions for the 2009-10 PBA Tour season will be up for grabs.
