Ray_Johnson_5346.jpg Appearing in his first career title match, Ray Johnson defeated Guppy Troup, 2-1, in the finals of the 2005 PBA Senior Manassas Open Wednesday at Bowl America Manassas. Johnson, who took home $8,000, won the opening game, 222-215. Troup failed to strike in the 10th frame while Johnson struck on his first ball to clinch the win.

"I didn't really have a mindset of winning or not winning," said Johnson, who last week won his third career PBA Senior Regional Tour event. "I just tried to commit and make good shots. Even against Guppy, I didn't think of winning or losing. I wanted to throw strikes and see what would happen."

Johnson suffered his worst game of the week during a 235-167, game two loss to Troup, who was also looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour win.

A 60-year-old pro shop owner from Battle Creek, Mich., Johnson responded by winning the deciding game, 227-163. He strung together three strikes early on while Troup opened after failing to convert the "Big Four" (4-6-7-10 split) late in the game.

Prior to the win, Johnson's best career finish was 14th in the 2001 PBA Senior Jackson Open. Johnson needed three games to punch his ticket to the title match by defeating Don Sylvia, 2-1. With the match tied, Johnson won game three, 211-199.

Troup, owner of eight PBA Tour titles, advanced to the title match by defeating Roger Bowker, a five-time PBA Tour title winner, 2-0. Troup narrowly won the first game, 245-236, before handily taking game two, 216-169.

The PBA Senior Tour moves on to Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Ind., for the 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm, Aug. 8-11.

Johnson, Troup, Sylvia and Bowker to bowl for the title

Ray Johnson has never been as close to reaching his dream as he is right now. Johnson defeated Hollis McMullen, three-games-to-two, in the 2005 PBA Senior Manassas Open Round of 8 Wednesday at Bowl America Manassas.

The 60-year old will be making his first career championship round appearance. "This is my dream, to win a national stop. It's something I've always wanted and it's always been in the back of my head," said Johnson, who is coming off a PBA Senior Regional Tour win last week.

Johnson jumped out to a 2-0 lead as McMullen, who finished 125th in this event last season, averaged just 179.00 over his first two games. McMullen evened the match with a 225-210 win in game four.

Johnson, whose best career finish prior to this week was 14th in the 2001 PBA Senior Jackson Open, needed to mark in the 10th frame of the final game to secure the win. He was able to convert a 3-6-10 split en route to the 212-175 win.

In other matches, Guppy Troup beat Ron Winger, 3-1, averaging 242.00 for the match. Troup owns 36 titles between the PBA Regional and Senior Regional Tours, but is looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title in 48 tries.

Don Sylvia, looking for his first title since 2003, dispatched Don Patterson, 3-0. Sylvia narrowly won game one, 181-179, before winning the next two games by an average of 71 pins.

Roger Bowker beat Tim Kauble, 3-1, and will be making his first championship round appearance of the season. The semifinals and finals will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Tom Baker tops in Qualifying

Tom Baker knows that a win this week may lock up the PBA Senior Player of the Year Award. He made a huge step towards that goal by averaging 227.13 over his final eight-game qualifying set Tuesday at Bowl America Manassas to lead the 2005 PBA Senior Manassas Open with a 5,350, 24-game pinfall and earn a bye into the Round of 16.

Baker has six top-5 finishes this season and has earned a bye into the Round of 16 in each of the seven PBA Senior Tour standard events. Coupled with his 2005 PBA Senior U.S. Open win as well as his top-2 ranks in Tour earnings, average and points, a win this week would add to his season resume.

"My thinking is, one [win] in the next three weeks," said Baker, who fired scores of 235, 257 and 245 to close out his day. "Let's get it over with. Obviously, my goal is a win here then I'd have two wins along with [Dale] Eagle, as well as two seconds."

The top eight bowlers after qualifying earned byes into the best-of-five games match play Round of 16. Round 2 leader Roger Bowker was second with 5,312, while Michael Henry landed in third with 5,301.

Dale Eagle, looking for his third title of the season, tied for 5th with the three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year Award winner Bob Glass, with 5,282. Eagle owns 10 PBA Senior Tour titles and Glass owns nine. Don Sylvia, Discovery Bay, Calif., earned the 8th and final bye into the round of 16 with 5,268.

Qualifiers 17-32 will begin match play Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. The semifinals and finals on Wednesday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Roger Bowker overtakes lead in Manassas

Roger Bowker averaged 230.50 over his eight-game set Monday to leap one spot and to overtake the lead in the 2005 PBA Senior Manassas Open after the second round. Bowker has a 3,688 16-game pinfall for the week after shooting 201 or better in each of his eight games on Monday.

Still looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, Bowker made his move in a torrid three-game stretch, shooting 267, 268 and 256 before finishing with a 213. Bowker, owner of five PBA Tour titles, is in a good position to lock up a bye into the best-of-five games match play round of 16. Byes are handed out to the top eight qualifiers after 24 games.

"I'm bowling well enough, but you never know until you get that pairing," Bowker said of his chances this week. "It seems like I've been getting paired [in match play] against someone who gets hot; it doesn't matter how well I bowl."

David Kneas is second with 3,611 while Tim Kauble is third with 3,560. Fourth palce belongs to Bob Glass at 3,549, while first round leader Lee Brosius slipped to fifth, 3,544. Dale Eagle, looking for his third title of the season, is 12th with 3,484. Eagle is tied for 4th all-time with 10 career PBA Senior Tour titles.

Bob Caruso has 3,298, and beat out Bill McCorkle for the 37th and final spot into the 3rd round of qualifying. The top-37 qualifiers advance to another eight-game qualifying block Tuesday morning, after which the top 32 will advance to match play. Qualifiers 17-32 will begin match play Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. The semifinals and finals on Wednesday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Non PBA member Brosius takes first round lead in Manassas

Lee Brosius wanted to know if he had what it took to compete against the top bowlers on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour. He had what he needed, and more, as he captured the top spot after the first round of qualifying with a 1,891 eight-game pinfall Sunday at Bowl America Manassas.

"I needed to see if I'm still competitive or not. I needed to play against this level of competition and see where I stood," said Brosius, a 55-year old retired Army security officer. "I haven't been here for a while."

Brosius started off quickly with scores of 226, 235 and 270. He rebounded from a 184 in game five by averaging 244.33 over his final three games. Brosius separated himself from the pack with a 269 in his final game.

Brosius was a member of the PBA and bowled on the PBA Regional Tour until he dropped his card in 1990. Roger Bowker was second with 1,844 while Tim Kauble was third with 1,842. Kauble, looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, finished second in this event last season.

PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker, Buffalo, was 6th with 1,792. The 2004 PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Glass, Lawrence, Kan., was 14th with 1,713. The entire field will return Monday for an additional eight games of qualifying, after which the top one-third of the field will roll eight more games of qualifying Tuesday.

The top 32 qualifiers will advance to best-of-five games match play, with qualifiers 17-32 bowling each other Tuesday evening. The semifinals and finals on Wednesday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.
