2009 Chuck Pezzano Scholarship fund recipients announced

With the goal to find young, talented, intelligent writers from our youth bowlers, this year the Chuck Pezzano Scholarship received 13 very qualified applicants, the most in the history of Bowling Writers Association of America. Scholarship chairman, Joan Romeo, worked diligently with several proprietor groups and state writers groups to get the word out and her efforts paid off.
The 2009 first place winner, Thomas Madrecki, Northbrook, Ill, will receive a $1000. scholarship. Thomas, also the 2008 winner, is an intern at Bowlers Journal Magazine who frequently contributes feature articles and was honored to have his work included in Luby Publishing's Top 50 Professional Bowlers Association Players book.
Because of the criteria used by the committee, there was a tie for second place. Heather D'Errico, Rochester , NY and Ryan Yadao, Las Vegas , Nev. were each awarded $750.
Heather, a fitness major uses "technological advances" to communicate for the sport She is a member of the Robert Morris University Women's Bowling Team. Ryan was a journalist for his high school paper and is attending UNLV. He wrote a narrative for TenPin Alley explaining his experiences during the 50th Anniversary PBA Tournament of Champions.
In spite of a tie for second place, and due mostly in part to the number of qualified applicants, the committee decided to award a $500. third place scholarship to Michelle Todisco, West Chester , Penn. Michelle, a member of the Penn State Women's Bowling Team, is also a Public Relations Intern for the American Red Cross.
All thirteen applicants will receive a one-year paid membership in the Bowling Writers Association of America which will hopefully be renewed as they continue their pursuits in the communications field and in the sport of Bowling.
Other recipients are Kyle Calcote, Friendswood, Tex.; Joanna Griem, Phoenix, Ariz.; Amanda Hollenbaugh, Tucson, Ariz.; Donovan Howard, Texas City, Tex.; Jared Kidwell, Indianapolis, Ind.; Liz Sautter, Sunnyvale, Calif.; Patrick Smith, Bakersfield, Calif.; Victoria Spencer, Yorktown, Va.; Lucas Reilly, Sayre, Penn.
The BWAA annually awards the Chuck Pezzano Scholarship to worthy recipients and is named in honor of journalist Chuck Pezzano of Clifton, N.J. Among his many accomplishments, Chuck is a member of the BWAA, American Bowling Congress (USBC) and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fames.
Qualities which are considered include academic achievement, civic involvement and bowling participation. The applicants must have a min. 2.5/4.0 GPA or equivalent, perform community service and participate in the sport of bowling, although bowling skills are not a requisite. The application must also include at least one reference letter, a school transcript and a short essay. The deadline for the 2010 scholarship applications will be early May of 2010.
