United States girls, Puerto Rican boys and Guatemala's sub-16 Mixed Foursome lead team event at halftime

The Junior Team USA girls and the Puerto Rican boys in the Under-20 division and Guatemala's sub-16 Mixed Foursome rolled into the lead after the opening day of the four-player team event Thursday at the 2009 Pan American Bowling Confederation Youth Championships. All teams bowl three final games Friday to determine the medal winners.
Led by Kristie Petravich's 698 series, the United States' girls team shot 2,516, an average of 209.67 for three games, and leads Colombia by 55 pins. The Junior Team USA girls were consistent on the day, shooting games of 859, 840 and 817. Brittni Hamilton added 631, Christine Bator shot 611 and Jenn Boisselle contributed 576.

"The girls are in a very good position," Junior Team USA head coach Rod Ross said. "They played consistently throughout the bowling center and that's impressive because this center can be tricky across the house."
Anggie Ramirez (683), Maria Rodriguez (656), Laura Fonnegra (595) and Tatiana Garzon (527) from the host country sit in second place with 2,461 or an average of 205.08. Canada with Kodee Pilling (628), Rosalie Hiscock (623), Pamela Beaudin (598) and Valerie Calberry (546) is third with 2,395 (199.58) and has a 105-pin cushion over 4th placed Mexico.
Junior Team USA's boys got off to a strong start (885) but Puerto Rico's Israel Hernandez, Samuel Montalvo, Hector Soto and Anibal Marin (pictured right) rebounded with a huge 924 in game #2 to overtake the lead and never they looked back. The Puerto Ricans lead the field of eight countries at halfway point with 2,455 pinfall total and an average of 204.58 per game.
Marin led the team with 672 and was followed by Hernandez (644), Montalvo (587) and Soto (552).
Venezuela with Michael Piccari (588), Carlos Cottone (677), Kevin Belandria (613) and 1^!Giorgio Clinaz (563) is just 14 pins behind in second place with 2,441 (203.42).
The Team USA boys ended the day 33 pins off the lead in third place with 2,422. Chris Pierson led the team with a 650 series and was followed by Jake Peters (618), Geoffrey Young (588) and Daniel Spink (566).
"The boys went through some tough transitions," Ross said. "We aren't where we wanted to be, but we're not in a bad position. We look forward to tomorrow."
"The competition is extremely tough and the quality of the players is really high," Ross continued. "The teams are getting stronger every year, and they are continuing to get better coaching."
In Girls All Events, Christine Bator (pictured left), USA, increased her lead slightly on Colombia's Laura Fonnegra. Bator has 4,470 for 21 games, an average of 212.86, while Fonnegra has totaled 4,399. Places 3-5 belong to Bator's teammates Petravich (4,376), Boisselle (4,334) and Hamilton (4,326).
On the boys side, 18-game leader Jake Peters, USA, who has totaled 4,534, dropped out of the lead by a single pin. Mexico's Alejandro Montijo bowled a 700 series in team event and has an all-events total of 4,535. Chris Pierson is third with 4,422.
After team concludes Friday, the top 16 players in the all-events standings will advance to Masters match play on Saturday.
