Traber moves to the top at PBA Senior Miller Lite Decatur Open in bid for third title
08/11/09
Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis., bidding for his third Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour title of the year and of his brief two-year career, charged into the lead at the end of qualifying Monday in the PBA Senior Miller Lite Decatur Open at Spare Time Lanes.
Traber finished Monday's competition with a 16-game total of 3,680 pins and a 26–pin lead over PBA Hall of Famer Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas, who won last week's PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open. Steve Ferraro of Kingston, N.Y., was third with 3,590 pins followed by Hugh Miller of Seattle at 3,588 and Jack Wallisch of Hot Springs Village, Ark., at 3,585. First-round leader Bennie Holman of Decatur dropped to 10th place with 3,553 pins.
"It's either been real good or real bad for me all year – nothing in between," said Traber, who won the USBC Senior Masters in June, two weeks after winning his first PBA Senior Tour title in Brentwood, Calif. "Some weeks I can't get matched up or I make moves too late. Today I stayed ahead of the transition. When I went high with a shot, I moved."
The 110-player field was trimmed to the top 32 players who will advance to best-of-five match play beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. Match play continues all day on Tuesday with the Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
