Four-time PBA Senior titlist hopes to end six-year title drought in Joliet

Bob_Chamberlain_5174.jpgFour-time Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour titlist Bob Chamberlain (pictured) averaged 246.6 to take the first-round qualifying lead Sunday in the PBA Senior Miller Lite Knockout Classic, presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association, at Town and Country Lanes.

Chamberlain, who won his last title in 2003, said a change in the ball position in his stance over the summer break has dramatically improved his game. "I've cashed every week this year, sometimes as a Super Senior, but it hasn't been a good year," the 60-year-old Villages, Fla., resident said. "I worked on a few things and now I'm throwing the ball real good. Hopefully things will turn around."

2009PBAS08WayneWebb_small.jpgChamberlain rolled games of 234, 290, 183, 266, 236, 247, 257 and 260 for an eight-game total of 1,973 pins and a 45-pin lead over Senior U.S. Open champion Wayne Webb (right) of Sacramento, Calif. Four-time PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker of King, N.C., was in third place with a 1,922 total followed by Kent Wagner of Palmetto, Fla., at 1,895 and Hugh Miller of Seattle at 1,888.

The 117-player field will bowl another eight-game qualifying round on Monday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to the unique "knockout" rounds Tuesday. The "knockout" rounds, starting at 10 a.m., will feature three-game total pinfall competition among four players on a given pair of lanes, with the top two advancing. The last three-game round begins at 7 p.m. followed immediately by one-game semifinal and championship rounds.
