20-time PBA Tour champion seeks third PBA Senior Tour title in Joliet

2009USBCOCWayneWebb.jpgProfessional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Wayne Webb of Sacramento, Calif., averaged 230 for 16 qualifying games to pace the 32-man qualifying field in the PBA Senior Miller Lite Knockout Classic, presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association, at Town and Country Lanes Monday.

Webb, seeking his third PBA Senior Tour title, rolled games of 277, 206, 228, 206, 198, 254, 241 and 244 to finish with a total of 3,782 pins and a 22-pin lead over Kent Wagner of Palmetto, Fla.

Wagner, a PBA Senior Tour rookie, hasn't won since winning both of his PBA Tour titles in 1987. Hugh Miller of Seattle was third with 3,736 pins followed by Robert Flaws of Chicago Ridge, Ill., at 3,696 and Dave Patchen of Oregon, Ohio, at 3,667.

First block leader Bob Chamberlain, The Villages, Fla., fell to 18th place with 3,568
"You've got to get lucky to win these events," said Webb, who won his second straight Senior U.S. Open title earlier in the season. "I'm not a fan of tournaments where you drop pins and start over in match play, but this format is a little different, so you never know."

The 117-player field has been cut to the top 32 players who will begin competition in the unique "knockout" rounds Tuesday at 10 a.m. The "knockout" rounds will feature four players on a pair of lanes, bowling three games.

The two lowest-scoring bowlers will be eliminated, with the top two advancing. The last three-game round begins at 7 p.m. followed immediately by one-game semifinal and championship rounds.
