Korean bowlers claim the first gold medals 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championship

2009AIBCLogo.jpg Kim Young Pyo of Daegu, Korea, and Yoon Jun Sil, Pohang, Korea, claimed the first gold medals of the 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championship when they won the men's and women's Singles competition Monday at Central Lanes in Tamuning, Guam,

Kim, who medaled in all but Singles in last year's AIBC winning two gold (Doubles, All Events) and two silver medals (Team, Masters), fired games of 242, 246 and 276 to lead the field of 59 players from 15 cities after the first block with 764, and he never looked back.

Kim, who was awarded an 18K gold ring for his 300 game in the 2008 AIBC during the Opening Ceremonies, added 269, 246 and 196 (711) to cruise to victory with 1475 six-game total and an average of 245.83.

Daegu bowlers swept the medals in the men's division. Choi Suk Byung started with a 686 block but leaped into second place with 1434 (239.00) behind the field-best 748 in the second block (247, 268, 233).

Shin Sung Hoon was third with 1412 (235.33) featuring blocks of 699 and 713. Lau Kwan Ho, Hong Kong City, Hong Kong, was fourth with 1382, with the best player of Guam, JD Castro of Tamuning, in fifth with 1363.

The fourth player from Daegu, Bae Su Wook, started with a 299 game but had to settle for 8th place after finishing with 1342.

On the women's side, Yoon was in third position after the first block with 682 including one of two 279 games. Defending champion Liza Clutario, Paranaque City, Philippines, had the other to lead the field of 40 women from 10 cities with 702. Fely Mandapat, Tamuning, Guam, was second with 683.

Yoon overtook the lead after a 248 in the fourth game and added games of 235 and 185 (668) to win the gold medal with 1350 six-game total and an average of 225.00. Clutario slipped to second place to take the silver medal with 1335 (222.50) behind a 633 series in the second block.

Lara Posadas, Paranaque City, Philippines, rolled a 651 in block #2 to leap into third place with 1297 (216.16´7). Kim Hee Jung, Pohang, Korea, had a 661 series but fell 11 pins short of the bronze medal to finish fourth with 1286. Mandapat was the best player of the host federation, Guam Bowling Congress, in fifth place with 1263.

The 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championship will commence on Tuesday with the men's and women's Doubles competition.
