Daegu and Pohang win their second gold in Doubles at 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championship

Kim Young Pyo rolls the first 300 game of the Championship

2009AIBCLogo.jpg 2009AIBCOpeningCeremonies5.jpgMen's Singles champion Kim Young Pyo teamed with silver medalist Choi Suk Byung while women's Singles champ Yoon Jun Sil joined forces with 4th place finisher Kim Hee Jung to win the gold medals in Doubles for Daegu and Pohang, both Korea, in the 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championship Tuesday at Central Lanes in Tamuning, Guam.

Kim, who was awarded an 18K gold ring for his 300 game in the 2008 AIBC during the Opening Ceremonies two days ago (pictured right), rolled another 300 game in the second game of the Doubles competition. Kim chalked up 1462, the highest series of the day, and Choi added the third-highest 1457 series to easily win the title with 2919 six-game total or an average of 243.25 per game.

Local favorites JD Castro and Brian Manibusan were 159 pins behind to earn the silver medal with 2760 (230.00). Manibusan had 3-game series of 708 and 754 to tie Kim at 1462 and Castro added 1298.

The second duo from Daegu, Bae Su Wook and Shin Sung Hoon, had a strong finish with games of 556, 483 and 474 (1513/252.16 Avg.) but missed the silver medal by one pin to land in third place with 2759 (229.92).

Kim Deuk Sik and Im Hyun Woo, Pohang, Korea, were a distant fourth with 2637. 29 Doubles from 15 cities participated in the men's Doubles.

Kim and Yoon posted the two highest series in the women's division to win the second gold medal for Pohang by 257 pins. Kim had 1425 (237.50) including a 268 and Yoon contributed 1390 (231.67) including a 738 in the second block. The duo totaled 2815 pins and averaged 234.58.

Yap Wi Yin and Choy Poh Lai, Shah Alam, Malaysia, used a 1358 second block to move into second place and to earn the silver medal with 2558 (213.17). Yap led the duo with 1323 and Choy, a former Malaysian national team member, added 1235.

The bronze medal went to Shellee Javier and Fely Mandapat from the host city, Tamuning, Guam. The local favorites combined for 2550 (212.50), just 8 pins off the silver medal but also just 18 pins ahead of fourth place. Javier used the highest game of the day, 269, for a 1327 series and Mandapat had 1223.

Singles silver and bronze medalists, Liza Clutario and Lara Posadas, Paranaque City, Philippines, had to settle for fourth place with 2532 (211.00) after Javier/Mandapat beat them in the final game by 20 pins, 410 to 390.

The 59 men and 40 women will return on Wednesday for the four-player Team event. This event also decides the medals in All Events (combined results from Singles, Doubles and Team). The top 16 men and the top 16 women will advance to the Masters finals, which will conclude the Championship on Thursday and Friday.
