Guam's Mandapat leads by one pin as Women's Masters reaches halfway mark

2009AIBCLogo.jpg Fely Mandapat, who won the team gold with her team mates from the host city of Tamuning, Guam, took a 1-pin lead after the first block of the Women's Masters competition at the 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championship.

Mandapat felled 1799 pins over eight games round robin match play, an average of 224.88, and won all eight matches (10 pins bonus per win) to chalk up 1879 pins as the event has reached the halfway mark.

Doubles gold medalist Kim Hee Jung of Pohang, Korea, had the field-best 1828 total (228.50) but fell one pin short of a tie after going 5-3 in match play with 1878.

Places 3 to 5 belong to players from Paranaque City, Philippines. Liza Clutario also won all of her eight matches to sit in third place with 1851. Cecilia Yap, who won the gold medal with Clutario and Liza Del Rosario in Trios at the 2003 World Championships, was fourth with 1817 including a 4-4 won-loss record. Lara Posadas was mere two pins behind Yap in fifth with 1815 (5-3).

3-time gold medalist Yoon Jun Sil, Pohang, Korea, averaged 205.25 for the round and had a 3-4-1 won-loss-tie record to sit in 8th place with 1677, 174 pins off the pace for the medals.

The 16 bowlers representing six cities - Daegu, Korea; Paranaque City, Philippines; Pasay City, Philippines; Pohang, Korea; Shah Alam, Malaysia; and Tamuning, Guam - will return on Friday for the second and final block.

The top 16 of 40 women from 10 cities in All Events (combined results in Singles, Doubles and Team, 18 games overall) advanced to the Masters finals, which will conclude the 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championship on Thursday and Friday.

Players will determine the champion in 15 games round robin match play plus one game position round (10 games bonus per win) starting from scratch.
