BWAA Hall of Famer Joe Gennaro sells paper, honored with C.C. Bearden award

Good things have been coming Joe Gennaro's way in recent years. In 2006, he was inducted into the Bowling Writers Association of America's Hall of Fame for his continuing publication of The Bowling News, a weekly bowling tabloid newspaper serving the Dallas/Fort Worth market, and the Southwest Region monthly edition.
Gennaro has published the paper since 1956, and personally delivered it to DFW bowling centers every week since the beginning, making it the longest running bowling paper in the United States under the same owner.
Now 83, and experiencing some health problems, Gennaro decided it was time to sell his beloved business. In late summer, he sold it to Tony and Genie Franklin.

The Franklins are both avid and accomplished bowlers with regional pro titles on their resumes. Tony's parents, Bill and Carol Hazlett, will be the managing editors. The Hazletts previously worked with Gennaro for more than a decade as graphic arts editors.
In recognition of his amazing longevity in operating the Bowling News, The Texas Bowling Centers Association awarded the C.C. Bearden Award to Gennaro. The award is named for the former BPAA President who owned several centers in the Dallas-Fort Worth association.
"I never expected this," said a happy Gennaro when receiving the plaque from proprietor Jamie Brooks. "I have enjoyed my time working with the proprietors, but the most rewarding part was being able to recognize the bowlers in the paper every week."

The award was presented during a regional proprietors meeting in the Dallas area in October.
