2009ChrisBarnesChallenge.jpgNewman University collegiate bowler Derek Hartnell has posted the winning $1,600 bid in the winner-take-all Chris Barnes Challenge presented by Columbia 300 on Saturday at 3 p.m. Central at Northrock Lanes.

The three-game, total pinfall, winner-take-all match will be contested on the Blue lane conditioning pattern being used in the Pepsi Red, White and Blue Open currently underway at Northrock Lanes and it will be broadcast exclusively on pba.com's Xtra Frame as it happens.

200910PBA01ChrisBarnes2.jpgHartnell bowled in the Red, White and Blue, but failed to advance after 16 games, finishing in 89th place with 3,526 pins - a 220.38 average including a 300 game. Barnes (pictured right), a 12-time PBA Tour winner, advanced to the third round and finished in 32nd place with a 5606 total - a 233.58 average.

"I'm pretty excited," the 22-year-old senior said. "I saw in the advertising that the event is sponsored by Columbia 300, which also sponsors our collegiate team. Getting a chance to bowl one of the greatest players ever caught my eye and I thought it was something I wanted to try."

Newman University is based in Wichita, where it has been rising as a collegiate bowling threat in the shadow of the perennial powerhouse Wichita State University - the school Barnes starred with during his collegiate bowling days.

While Hartnell admits there is a heated rivalry between the two schools, he said his challenge to Barnes has nothing to do with that.

"I'm just looking to get some experience," he said.
