PBAEst1958_small.jpg Bobby Hall II of Landover, Md., who jumped into the lead after two rounds of the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium, retained the top spot after the third round of competition.

Hall, who trailed Dave Beres of Waukesha, Wis., by 24 pins after the first six games on the Professional Bowlers Association's Cheetah lane conditioning pattern, finished the six-game Viper round Wednesday afternoon and then the Chameleon round Wednesday night with an 18-game total of 4,032 pins – a 224 average – and a 69-pin lead over Jeff Zaffino of Warren, Pa. Chad Kloss of Greenfield, Wis., was third with a 3,936 total.

"Actually the Viper isn't one of my favorite patterns because I've always done bad on it," Hall said after his afternoon round. "Last year I shot 150 (pins) under (a 200 average) on the Viper, so there is something to be said about learning from past mistakes."

Like the majority of the players in the field, Hall has his eye on a Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exemption for the 2010-11 season. That prize will go to up to seven players who finish among the top 16.

"My main focus is to get an exemption," Hall said Wednesday night. "I can't even see first place. I just see a top seven finish. As long as I make the top seven and a touring spot next year, that means a lot to me. If I win it, it's like icing on the cake. That's would be wonderful.

"Now it's my chance as a horse to run the race," he added. "This is my time. Winning an exemption would mean I'll be able to shut a lot of people up that thought I couldn't do it." Hall said.

The complete field will bowl two more six-game rounds on the PBA Scorpion and Shark patterns, respectively, Thursday. The tournament standings will be based on 30 games, actual pinfall.

The PBA Regional Players Invitational is open only to players who finished among the top 25 in competition points in their respective regions. In addition to a $7,500 first prize and a berth in the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions for the winner, the seven players also are competing for PBA Tour Exemptions for the 2010-11 season.
