Singaporean Girls storm to Team gold with record performance

Singapore's Bernice Lim wins gold in All Events; Aussie Rebecca Whitting shoots 300

2010AsYCGirlsTeamSingapore.jpgStarting the second 3-game block on short oil in 5th place and 313 pins off the pace for the gold medal, the Singaporean girls Bernice Lim, Gina Lim, Krishna Darshini and New Hui Fen set three Asian Youth Championship records en route to win the gold medal in the 4-player Team event.

The foursome sandwiched games of 960 and 832 around a record 985 game, felled record 2777 pins on the short pattern, an average of 231.42, and finished with record 5150 pinfall total, an average of 214.58 over sic games (three games on long and three games on short oil).

2010AsYCGirlsTeamJapan.jpgLong oil leader Japan with Rina Asada, Yuri Sato, Mika Yamada and Misaki Mukotani (pictured right) missed the gold medal by mere 8 pins behind games of 824, 854 and 778 to finish in second place with 5142 (214.25).

Korea with Singles champion Baek Seung Ja, Kim Hyun Mi, Kim Yeon Ju and Lee Yeon Ji was another 25 pins behind games of 918, 896 and 746 to land in third place with 5117 (213.21).

Rebecca Whitting from Australia finished the Team event by rolling a 300 game, the fifth perfecto of the championship (one in each event) thus far. Whitting used the second highest 3-game series of the day (772) for the field-best 1422 six-game series (237 avg.).

2010AsYCMukotaniLimBaek.jpgDoubles gold medalist Bernice Lim, Singapore, had the highest 782 3-game series on short oil including games of 269, 287 and 226 to secure the gold medal in All Events with 4242 18-game total (combined results in Singles, Doubles and Team) and an average of 235.67. Lim broke the previous Championship record held by Maxim Nable of Australia (3766 in 1999) by 476 pins.

Misaki Mukotani, Japan, beat out Baek Seung Ja, Korea, for the silver medal by just one pin, 4153 to 4152. The top 3 played in their own class outaveraging the rest of the field by at least 10 pins.

The top 16 in All Events advanced to the Masters finals on Monday and Tuesday. Korea is the sole team that has all four players in the Masters. Japan, Malaysia and Singapore will be represented by three players, Australia by two and Hong Kong by one player.

31 girls from 8 countries - Australia, China, DPR Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore - will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, 4-player Team, All Events and Masters.
