Shockers headline Peoria Sectional
03/10/10
After finishing their regular season last weekend, the Wichita State University Shockers bowling team quickly found out that they will be traveling to Peoria, Ill. to compete in the Peoria Sectional, March 13-14. Both the men and women (pictured) will be competing in the same sectional which features 17 teams in the men's division and 18 in the women's.
The top four teams from each will advance to the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center in El Paso, Texas on April 14-17.
The Shockers will head to the familiar Midwest sectional (normally held in Fairview Heights, Ill.) where they have advanced to the finals every time they have competed there. Last season the Shockers swept the sectional with both the men and women winning.
"In recent years the Shockers have stayed in the Midwest and that will help, but there are no 'free passes at Sectionals. We'll have to bowl very well to advance."
Joining WSU in the men's division is: Bellarmine, Calumet College of St. Joseph, Delta, Kansas, McKendree, Morehead State, Nebraska-Omaha, Newman, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Toledo, Vincennes, Viterbo, Western Illinois, Wisconsin-Madison and Wright State.
As the #1 ranked team in the collegebowling.com power rankings, the Shockers were able to earn a spot at the closest regional and represent one of the top four teams in Peoria. Other notable teams include #7 Newman, #9 Calumet College and #13 Wright State.
As the #2 ranked team in the power rankings, the Lady Shockers will be joined in Peoria by: Bellarmine, Elmhurst, Illinois State, Illinois-Urbana, McKendree, Newman, Robert Morris-Peoria, South Dakota State, Viterbo, Western Illinois, William Penn, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wisconsin-Platteville, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Wright State.
Notable teams facing the Lady Shockers include #8 McKendree and #15 Bellarmine.
Sectional assignments are based on the Team Ranking System points earned in USBC Collegiate-certified competition throughout the season. USBC Collegiate attempts to place no more than two of the top eight schools and no more than four of the top 16 schools in a sectional based on final TRS totals. Sectional Qualifier fields are determined by taking geographic distance, economics and field size into consideration.
The sectionals will consist of 32 Baker System games each day for a total of 64 Baker games. The top four teams based on total pinfall in each division following the completion of competition at each sectional will advance to the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships.
All four sectionals will run concurrently at the following locations: AMF Parkway Lanes in Allentown, Pa.; Holiday Bowl-Brainerd in Chattanooga, Tenn.; Landmark Lanes in Peoria, Ill.; and the South Point Hotel and Casino Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
