2010 PBA Senior Tour #6

Top 63 join defending champion Dale Traber in double-elimination match play

2010PBAS06PeterKnopp2.jpg2010PBAS06RogerKossert.jpgPeter Knopp of Bremen, Germany, earned high qualifier honors Wednesday at the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters.

Knopp (pictured left), who was in fifth place after the second round, has a 15-game total of 3,296, an average of 219.7, at the South Point Hotel and Casino Bowling Center. He shot 1,095 in Round 3 and leads Roger Kossert (right) of Lithia, Fla., by six pins.

"There are so many good players here, and I still don't have the confidence I should," said Knopp, who finished 29th at the Senior U.S. Open last week. "I am the underdog. I'm just happy I made the cut."

Knopp became Germany's first PBA professional in the early 1990s when played on the PBA National Tour from 1992 to '94. His best finish was a 13th place at the 1992 PBA Wichita Open.

Knopp, who turned 50 in April, opened the USBC Senior Masters with a five-game block of 1,077 and then shot 1,124 in Tuesday's second round. He said he has bowled well on what he considers tough lane conditions.

"If you bowl good, it might look easy but I think it's pretty tough," Knopp said. "I kept the ball in play, and even though I missed some spares, I got lucky a couple times."

2010PBAS06BobHandley.jpg2010PBASDaleTraber.jpgRoss Packard of San Jose, Calif., sits in third position at 3,286, while Kent Wagner of Palmetto, Fla., is fourth at 3,269. Bob Handley (pictured left) of Winter Park, Fla., who led after the first and second rounds, dropped to fifth with 3,254 after shooting 963 on Wednesday.

The top 63 players advanced to the double-elimination match-play bracket, which will take place Thursday and Friday. Kevin Gannon of Lakewood, Calif., and Dave Sill of Rockledge, Fla., tied for the final spot at 3,017. Sill won a one-game roll-off, 232-196, to advance to the match-play bracket.

Defending champion Dale Traber (right) of Cedarburg, Wis., now joins the field to complete the 64-player bracket. Traber will be seeded No. 32 in the bracket and will take on Gary Dickinson of Edmond, Okla., in the opening round Thursday morning.

Match play will continue throughout Thursday and Friday with the championship match scheduled for 3:30 p.m. PDT on Friday.
