Pöllänen beats Andersson to end 2010 Women's European Championships with victory in Masters

Five countries share the medals in Riga, Latvia

2010WECLogo.jpg Krista Pöllänen, Finland, defeated Sandra Andersson, Sweden, two-games-to-one to win the gold medal in Masters in the 3rd Women's European Championships 2010 Saturday at Zelta Boulinga Center in Riga, Latvia.

The 2009 World Games champion, seeded third after winning the bronze medal in All Events won the first game in best-of-three format, 215-194. No. 7 seed Andersson, who rolled the championship's first 300 game in her Round of 16 victory over Britt Brøndsted, Denmark, rebounded with a 215-200 win in game #2 to force a deciding third game.

The long-time Finnish national team member wrapped up the title with a 249-214.

Andersson received the silver medal while Hayley White, England (0-2 vs. Andersson), and Kamilla Kjeldsen, Denmark (0-2 vs. Pöllänen), shared the bronze medal.

The top 24 players of the All Events standings consisting of four players each from Denmark, England, Finland, Netherlands and Sweden, two from Germany and one each from Israel and the host country of Latvia advanced to the best-of-three games single-elimination Masters finals, which concluded the 3rd Women's European Championships Saturday at Zelta Boulinga Center in Riga.

The top 8 players spearheaded by All Events champion Rikke Holm Rasmussen, Denmark, earned one bye and were seeded into the Round of 16. The top 7 advanced to the quarterfinals in which Rasmussen was eliminated by team mate Kjeldsen, 2-1, and No. 2 seed Mai Ginge Jensen, Denmark, fell to Andersson, 2-0..

Five of the 23 participating countries shared the medals n Doubles, Trios, Team, All Events and Masters. Denmark won two gold medals (Team, All Events), 1 silver and 3 bronze. Finland was next with 1 gold (Masters), 1 silver and 2 bronze. Sweden had 1 gold (Doubles), 1 silver and 1 bronze. England got 1 gold (Trios) and 3 bronze and finally the Netherlands earned 2 silver medals (Team, Trios).
