Andraunick Simounet is the surprise winner in CAGC Men's Masters

Wins final gold medal of the Central American Games for host Puerto Rico

2010CACGAndraunickSimounet.jpg2010CACGArmandoBatres.jpgAndraunick Simounet (pictured left) ended the bowling competition of the 21st Central American and Caribbean Games at bowling center Caribe in Ponce, Puerto Rico, with a surprise victory in Men's Masters match play.

In the best-of-three title match between the two lowest-seeded players, No. 15 Simounet defeated No. 16 Armando Batres (right), Guatemala, two-games-to-none, to win the second gold medal for the host country after his victory in Trios with team mates Israel Hernández and Gabriel Sanchez. Batres earned the silver medal, the sole medal for Guatemala in the men's division and the second overall.

Simounet and Batres finished in 15th and 16th place on the All Events leaderboard (combined results of Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Trios and Team competition) to grab the last two spots for the Masters match play.

The key for the success of the two underdogs was a first round victory over the two top seeded players. Batres stunned All Events gold medalist Jose Estrada, Dominican Republic, and Simounet ousted No. 2 Andres Gomez, Colombia, both in two games.

2010CACGLuisOlivo.jpgOther than in international bowling events such as the World Championships and European Championships, where in each round the highest seeded player meets the lowest seeded player, the second highest the second lowest and so on, the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) is contesting its Masters match play in a bracket system like in tennis.

Simounet fired games of 256, 268 and back-to-back 279 to eliminate Trios partners Israel Hernández and Gabriel Sanchez on his way to the title match. Batres swept Frankie Colon, Puerto Rico, in the quarterfinal and topped Singles and Team champion Luis Olivo (pictured left), Venezuela, in the semifinal in the decider, 210-180. Sanchez and Olivo shared the bronze medal.

Simounet flew past his opponent in the first game of the championship match, 215-136, and sealed the victory with a 217-181 win in game #2. The champion posted an 8-0 won-lost record in match play averaging 243.25 for his eight games.

With the victory the Puerto Rican men moved into second place in the men's medal tally with 2 gold (Trios, Masters) and 2 bronze medals. Venezuela led the way with 2 gold (Team, Singles), 1 silver and 2 bronze. The Dominican Republic was the third multiple gold medalist winning two titles (Doubles, All Events) and 1 bronze medal. Colombia had 1 gold (Mixed Doubles) and 4 silver medals, Mexico, 1 silver and 1 bronze, Guatemala 1 silver and Bermuda and Costa Rica 1 bronze each.

Colombia led the overall medal tally (six disciples each in men's and women's division plus the Mixed Doubles) with 4 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. Venezuela was second with 4-2-2. The Dominican Republic took home 3 gold and 1 bronze, while the host country Puerto Rico won 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. Mexico had 4 silver and 2 bronze, Guatemala 2 silver and Bermuda and Costa Rica 1 bronze each.

2010CACGLogo.jpg The 21st Central American and Caribbean Games (XXI Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos y del Caribe) took place in the city of MayagĂĽez and in other cities of the Porta del Sol region in the west of Puerto Rico. The Bowling competition was held at Bolera Caribe in Ponce from July 19-25, 2010.

74 men from 14 member federations of CONCECABOL (Confederacion Centroamericana y del Caribe de Bowling - Central and Caribbean Bowling Confederation) - Bahamas (6), Bermuda (6), Colombia (6), Costa Rica (6), Dominican Republic (6), Guatemala (6), Mexico (6), Panama (6), Puerto Rico (6), Venezuela (6), El Salvador (5), Honduras (4), Netherlands Antilles (3), Virgin Islands (2) - competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Trios, 5-Player Teams, All Events and Masters.
