Malaysian girls take the lead in the Team event after three games on short oil

Singapore, USA and Korea are close behind

2010WYCGirlsTeamMAS.jpgFatin Syazliana, Sin Li Jane, Jaqueline Sijore and Siti Safiyah (pictured l-r) from Malaysia lead the field of 22 four-player teams at the Girls Team event has reached its halfway point at the 11th World Youth Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

The foursome had games of 825, 782 and 861 to finish the 3-game block on short oil atop the leaderboard with 2468 pinfall total and an average of 205.67. Sin Li Jane led the team with 662 and was followed by Siti Safiyah (632), Fatin Syazliana (605) and Jaqueline Sijore (569).

Trailing the Malaysians by mere three pins to sit in second place were Singapore's Daphne Tan, New Hui Fen, Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan with 2465 (205.42). Ng had the highest game and the highest individual series of all girls competing in the Team event with 258 and 686.

2010WYCGirlsTeamUSA.jpgJunior Team USA girls featuring Kristie Petravich, Jennifer Boisselle, Brittni Hamilton and Christine Bator, (pictured r-l) led the field after games of 837 and 867 but slipped to third place after finishing with 756 for 2460 total (205.00). Boisselle led the team with 681.

Another 12 pins behind the Americans were the girls from Korea. Korean bowlers have medaled in all four events thus far claiming three top seeds and one second seed for the playoffs. Kim Yeon-Ju, Shin Bo-Hyun, Baek Seung-Ja and Kim Moon-Jeong struggled in the first two games (764 and 776) but rebounded with the field-best 908 game to jump into fourth place with 2448 (204.00). Singles champion Yeon-Ju tied Shayna Ng for the highest game of the day.

The next four teams are 60 to 68 pins off the pace for the medals. The Netherlands is 5th with 2388, followed by Latvia in sixth place with 2385, the host country of Finland in seventh place with 2384 and Colombia in eighth place with 2380.

With three games to go, Kim Moon-Jeong , Korea, leads in All Events with 3292 pinfall total and an average of 219.47 for 15 games. Previous leader Diana Zavjalova, Latvia, fell one spot to second place with 3274 (218.27). Third place belongs to Hayley White, England, with 3235 (215.67).

The girls are done for today and will return on Friday morning for the second block of three games on long oil. The top 4 teams with the highest six-game total will advance to the semifinals on Saturday scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. CET (2 a.m. EDT ).

In addition, the Team event will determine the medals in All Events (combined results from Singles, Doubles and Team event). The top 16 players after 18 games advance to Masters match play on Saturday and Sunday.

The United States Bowling Congress is working in cooperation with the Finnish Bowling Federation to provide live video streaming of the semifinals and finals of each event. Lucas Wiseman will be doing the commentary in English and the coverage will be available on BOWL.com,
