Henry Gonzalez wins PBA Tour season opener once again
04/26/06
Henry Gonzalez (left) won the season-opening event of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour for the second consecutive season, knocking off reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (right), two-games-to-one, in the best-of-three-games title match Tuesday in the 2006 Senior Manassas Open at Bowl America Manassas.
Gonzalez won last season's 2005 Senior Empire State Open for his first career PBA Senior Tour title. He used a clutch performance in the 10th frame of game two to propel him to the win Tuesday.
After Baker took game one, 216-198, Gonzalez bounced back with a 224-215 win in game two. After taking an early lead, Gonzalez fell behind with four consecutive spares in frames 5-9. Baker struck out in the 9th and 10th frames to force Gonzalez to strike in the 10th frame to at least force a tie. Gonzalez stepped up and doubled to send the match to a deciding game three.
Gonzalez started the final game with a spare, then strung together eight consecutive strikes to jump ahead of Baker, but the PBA Hall of Famer responded with seven strikes in eight frames to stay close. Gonzalez could have shut Baker out with a strike in the 10th frame, but a spare and nine pins gave Baker a chance to strike out to win by one pin. Last year's PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year left a 10-pin, however, giving Gonzalez the 268-248 win.
"That was work. The second (title) is just validating the first one. Anyone can win the first, but the second one feels so good," said Gonzalez, who is the third bowler to win the PBA Senior Tour season opener in consecutive seasons. "It feels even better when you're beating the best. Tom is the best guy out here, but I gave him all he could handle."
Baker, Buffalo, N.Y., who won one title last season, finished second for the third time in 12 career Senior Tour events. He took home $4,500, while Gonzalez, Colorado Springs, Colo., earned $8,000.
Gonzalez advanced to the title match with a 2-1 win over Ron Winger (left), Westlake Village, Calif., winning the deciding third game, 265-235. Baker advanced to the finals with a 2-0 win over Dale Eagle (right), Tavares, Fla.
The PBA Senior Tour moves to Chillicothe, Ohio for the 2006 Senior Chillicothe Open, April 29-May 2 at Shawnee Lanes. The finals will take place Tuesday, May 2 with the winner taking home $8,000.

2005 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Player and Rookie of the Year Tom Baker is at it again. Baker knocked off roommate Roger LeClair, three-games-to-two, Tuesday in the best-of-five-games match play Round of 8 to advance to tonight's final four in the season-opening 2006 Senior Manassas Open at Bowl America Manassas.
Baker, a PBA Hall of Famer who is also exempt on the Denny's PBA Tour, was dominating in his first season on the PBA Senior Tour, becoming the first bowler ever to win both PBA Senior and Rookie of the Year in the same season. His dominance denied LeClair (Clackamas, Ore.) a shot at Rookie of the Year, who finished 7th in points and 8th in earnings, which would have otherwise been enough to win the award.
On Tuesday, Baker jumped out to a 2-0 lead before LeClair charged back to even the match with wins of 247-211 and 246-216. Baker edged his roommate in game five to move on, 229-209.
"This is not easy. Both matches today were tough. I've been really worried in both…it wasn't looking good," said Baker (Buffalo, N.Y.), who won his Round of 16 match, 3-1, despite Bill Argenbright shooting 264 and 286 in the first two games. "Roger started off slow, but he finally got lined up and bowled 240-240 and I was in trouble. He didn't carry his last couple shots (in game five) and fortunately I pulled it out at the end."
Baker will face Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.), who knocked off Richard Nardozza (Clearfield, Pa.), 3-0. Eagle, who won two PBA Senior Tour titles last season, will be looking for his 11th career title. Eagle defeated Baker in the title match of the 2005 Senior Clarksville Open.
Also advancing to the semifinals was five-time PBA Senior Tour titlist Ron Winger (Westlake Village, Calif.), who defeated Guppy Troup (Taylorsville, N.C.), 3-1. Winger will face Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who defeated Don Blatchford (Santa Monica, Calif), 3-2.
Gonzalez will be looking to win the season-opening event for the second consecutive season. The Round of 4 will take place tonight at 7 p.m., featuring best-of-three-games match play. The title match, also best-of-three, takes place immediately following with the winner taking home $8,000.

PBA Hall of Famer Teata Semiz is making quite a comeback. Semiz, who suffered a heart attack in January which required surgery, is making a triumphant return to the PBA Senior Tour. He defeated Michael Lessar, three-games-to-none, in Monday's best-of-five-games match play Round of 32 in the 2006 Senior Manassas Open at Bowl America Manassas.
The North Brunswick, N.J. native owns three Denny's PBA Tour titles and eight PBA Senior Tour titles. He has not won on the PBA Senior Tour, however, since 1997. Semiz shot over 200 just once in the three games, but Lessar (Naples, N.Y.) struggled throughout the match.
After winning the first two games by ugly scores of 191-175 and 175-158, Semiz finished off Lessar with a 214-173 win. Semiz, who qualified 23rd overall, advances to face qualifier No. 10 Ron Winger in Tuesday's Round of 24.
In other matches, Tim Kauble (Marion, Ohio) dominated Bill Henson (Westerville, Ohio) in a 3-0 win, averaging 260.33. Kauble earlier shot 245 and 238 his final two games of qualifying to sneak into the top 32. Kauble will face No. 12 Dave Olm, a rookie who is bowling in his first career PBA Senior Tour event.
Another PBA Hall of Famer George Pappas (Charlotte, N.C.) advanced with a 3-0 win over Keith Sharp (Maitland, Fla.). Pappas will take on No. 15 Jimmy Plessinger. Gary Hiday (Indianapolis) bounced back from a 213-137 game-one loss to Don Sylvia (Discovery Bay, Calif.) to win the match, 3-1. Hiday won the final game, 287-211.
Tonight's winners will take on qualifiers 9-16 Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. ET in best-of-five-games match play. Those winners will face qualifiers 1-8 with the field eventually being whittled down to the final two, who will bowl for the $8,000 top prize in a best-of-three match Tuesday evening.

Like a fine wine, Dale Eagle just seems to get better with age. Eagle, who just turned 60 on Saturday, averaged 222.86 over his eight games Monday to finish qualifying with a 3,550 16-game pinfall to lead the field and earn the top seed for match play in the season-opening 2006 Senior Manassas Open at Bowl America Manassas.
Eagle (Tavares, Fla.), owns 10 PBA Senior Tour titles - fourth all-time - and won a Tour-high two titles last season. He's also coming off a successful season bowling the Qualifying Rounds on the Denny's PBA Tour, qualifying four times for standard Tour events through the Wednesday qualifiers.
"What has really helped me is bowling the Qualifying Rounds during the Tour season. It helps your bowling and it helped me with my accuracy. The conditions are just so much tougher out there," said Eagle, who used a Storm Pyro on Monday. "I made really good decisions and threw it much better than I did yesterday. I got more of a roll behind the ball and made it go straight in the pocket."
Eagle fired a high game of 255 in his sixth game of the day, then finished strong with a 235 to hold off Guppy Troup for the lead.
Troup (Taylorsville, N.C.), who finished second in last year's 2005 Senior Manassas Open, finished second with 3,538. Troup, who owns eight Denny's PBA Tour titles and 38 PBA Regional Tour titles, is still looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title.
Tom Baker (Buffalo), who beat out Eagle for 2005 PBA Senior Player of the Year in his rookie season, tied for third with Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with 3,527. Gonzalez won last year's season-opening event, the 2005 Senior Empire State Classic.
Richard Holmes (Luray, Va.) finished 8th with 3,421 and earned the final bye into Tuesday's Round of 16. Steve Bova (Massapequa, N.Y.) finished 32nd with 3,317, beating out Steve Lickliter (Beckley, W. Va.) for the final spot in match play by two pins.
Qualifiers 17-32 will bowl each other in best-of-five-games match play tonight, with the winners taking on qualifiers 9-16 Tuesday morning. Those winners will face qualifiers 1-8 with the field eventually being whittled down to the final two, who will bowl for the $8,000 top prize in a best-of-three match Tuesday evening.

2006 PBA Senior Tour #1
2006 PBA Senior Manassas Open

Tom Baker targets to win first event in 2006 PBA Senior Tour

Great comeback for Teata Semiz after heart surgery

Eagle rises to the top; wins qualifying in Senior Manassas Open

Rookie Dave Olm takes first lead in 2006 PBA Seniors Tour
PBA Senior Tour rookie Dave Olm fired a 268 in his final game Sunday to take the lead after the first of two qualifying rounds in the 2006 Senior Manassas Open at Bowl America Manassas.
Olm, who turned 50 last December to become eligible for the PBA Senior Tour, finished the day with a 1,823 eight-game pinfall.
Last season, rookie Tom Baker dominated the Tour, winning both the 2005 PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year awards. While Olm isn't expected to dominate like Baker, who is exempt on the Denny's PBA Tour, he's off to a good start in the season's first event and in the first Senior Tour event of his career.
"My goal is to be Rookie of the Year. Player of the Year would be difficult and even Rookie of the Year is difficult too, but you have to have some goals to work for," said Olm (Tampa, Fla.). "This is definitely a good start to fulfilling a dream. I don't think people realize how good these guys are out here. Even though they're 50- and 60-years-old, they're still really good players."
Olm had a consistent day, shooting under 200 just once. He shot 226 three times on the day and had high games of 256 and 268.
Baker (Buffalo, N.Y.), who made the Round of 8 in seven of 11 events last season and captured one title, is second after the first day with 1,804. Baker led the first day of qualifying in his first career PBA Senior Tour event last season in the 2005 Empire State Classic before losing in the Round of 8.
Keith Sharp (Maitland, Fla.) is third with 1,798. Guppy Troup (Taylorsville, N.C.), who owns eight Denny's PBA Tour titles and a record 38 career PBA Regional Tour titles but is still looking for his first PBA Senior Tour title, is fourth with 1,796. Troup finished second in last season's 2005 Senior Manassas Open.
All bowlers will return Monday for another eight games of qualifying before the field is cut to the top 32 who will begin match play Monday night. Match play continues Tuesday until just two bowlers remain. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Tuesday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.
