2006 PBA Senior Tour #2

Shawnee Lanes in Chillicothe, OH

2006PBAS02TomBaker.jpg In a battle of Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famers, Tom Baker outlasted Teata Semiz, two-games-to-one, to take home the title in the 2006 Senior Chillicothe Open Tuesday at Shawnee Lanes.

Baker, the 2005 PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year, captured his second career PBA Senior Tour title. He denied Semiz a chance to become the oldest champion in PBA Senior Tour history at 72 years old, as well as a chance to become just the fourth bowler in history to win a PBA title in five different decades. Teata Semiz.jpg Semiz's (right) run to the title was remarkable considering he suffered a heart attack in January and has only been back bowling for a month. He bowled 40 out of a possible 42 games during the tournament, winning five matches to reach the championship.

"I have mixed emotions. It's hard when you're bowling one of your good friends. My thoughts during the match would fade off and think about (Semiz) instead of making a good shot," said Baker, 51. "I hope I can throw it that good when I'm 72."

In the title match, Semiz jumped out to the early lead with a 222-214 win in game one, doubling in the 10th frame to win. Baker bounced back with a 269-255 win in game two. Semiz could have struck out in the 10th frame which would have forced Baker to strike out to win by one pin, but after doubling, Semiz left a 6-7-10 split. Baker then struck out to send the match to a deciding third game.

In the final game, Semiz, North Brunswick, N.J., ran out of steam, opening twice in the first three frames while Baker opened with three strikes. Semiz was never able to get untracked, and Baker cruised to a 226-148 win.

Baker, King, N.C., has now finished first and second in the first two events of the season. He lost to Henry Gonzalez in the finals of last week's 2006 Senior Manassas Open, but exacted some revenge by knocking off Gonzalez in Tuesday's Round of 16.

Baker advanced to the finals with a 2-0 win over Bill Keenan, Orlando, Fla..Semiz advanced to the title match with a 2-0 win over another PBA Hall of Famer, Johnny Petraglia (Manalapan, N.J.).

The PBA Senior Tour takes a month break before picking back up with the 2006 Senior Tucson Open at Golden Pin Lanes, June 10-14. The winner will take home $8,000.

Roger Kossert wins qualifying to earn first career top seed

Roger_Kossert_4689.jpg Roger Kossert earned the top seed for match play for the first time in his Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour career, leading qualifying with a 3,628 16-game pinfall in the 2006 Senior Chillicothe Open at Shawnee Lanes.

The left-hander from Lithia, Fla. averaged 223.50 in his eight-game block Monday. He was third after eight games Sunday, but he switched balls during practice Monday and the move paid off.

"I had a good shot both days. I was pretty consistent. You have to win matches though, that's the whole key," said Kossert, who owns one PBA Senior Tour title. "The ball I used this morning just went down the lane a little further for me and it worked well. I didn't even try the other one. I just had a plan and a good reaction and went with it."

Kossert came out on fire Monday, shooting a 257 in his first game, the highest game of his block. He also shot games of 247 and 249, and had just one game under 200.

Another lefty, Dave Patchen, Oregon, Ohio, finished second with 3,619, and a pair of PBA Hall of Famers follow him. Tom Baker, King, N.C., last year's PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year, is third with 3,163, while Johnny Petraglia, Manalapan, N.J., is fourth with 3,574.

Amateur Mike Swackhamer, Parkersburg, W. Va., bowling in his first career PBA Senior Tour event, finished 8th with 3,545 and earned the final bye into Tuesday's Round of 16. Tommy Nevitt, Jacksonville, Fla., finished 32nd with 3,359 to earn the final berth into match play, beating out Bernie Carlisle, Evansville, Ill., by just one pin.

Qualifiers 17-32 faced off in best-of-five-games match play Monday night. Last week's season-opening Senior Manassas Open champion Henry Gonzalez, Colorado Springs, Colo. advanced with a three-games-to-none win over Hollis McMullen, Rockville, Md.

The winners advance to face qualifiers 9-16 Tuesday morning. Those winners will then face qualifiers 1-8. Match play continues Tuesday until just two bowlers remain. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Tuesday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.

Amateur leads PBA Senior Chillicothe Open after Day One Qualifying

Mike Swackhamer.jpg Mike Swackhamer looked at this week's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour event simply as a break from his job. Now, he's leading the tournament. Swackhamer, who is an amateur, averaged 241.50 over his eight-game block Sunday to lead the first day of qualifying in the 2006 Senior Chillicothe Open at Shawnee Lanes. Picture courtesy of PBA.

The recently-turned 58-year-old, Parkersburg, W. Va., who works as a railroad engineer is bowling in his first career PBA Senior Tour event. He finished with a 1,932 eight-game pinfall, leading the field by 72 pins.

"One of my close friends called and said there was an event here and I had worked 32 days in a row on the railroad and figured this was a good way to take a break," said Swackhamer. "My goal was to just stay clean and be competitive. I just hope I don't fall on my face tomorrow."

Johnny_Petraglia_1778.jpg Swackhamer started his block with a 236, then missed a perfect game by just three pins with a 297 in game two. His lowest score of the block was a 222, which came in his final game. PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia (left), Manalapan, N.J., finished second with 1,860 after leading the first of two squads. Petraglia is looking for his sixth career PBA Senior Tour title, but his first since 2001.

Roger_Kossert_4689.jpg Tom_Baker_5733.jpg Roger Kossert (left), Lithia, Fla, is third with 1,840, while Steve Bova, Massapequa, N.Y., is fourth with 1,822. Tommy Kress, Rochester, N.Y., rounds out the top five with 1,816. PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker (right), who last year captured PBA Senior Player and Rookie of the Year honors, is tied for 9th with 1,806. Baker lost in the title match of last week's season-opening Senior Manassas Open to Henry Gonzalez. Gonzalez is 23rd with 1,724.

All bowlers will return Monday for another eight games of qualifying before the field is cut to the top 32 who will begin match play Monday night. Match play continues Tuesday until just two bowlers remain. The best-of-three-games title match takes place Tuesday evening with the winner taking home $8,000.
